Str 13, Dex 13, Cholesterol 223

The moral of the story is you may need to bite the bullet and ask about some type of medication. Statins (Lipitor, Crestor, etc) are the big drug of choice, though don't let the comericials fool you since the older (& cheaper) ones work just as well. There are other drugs available (Welchol, Zetia, and a handful of others), but there are often price or compliance issues (Welchol is a few tablets before every meal).

Hope I helped.

*Just a few weeks shy of being a 3rd year medical student*

My doc put me on Vytorin. He gets it for me for free fortunately. :)

I recently developed lactose intolerance.
You have my deepest sympathies. I've had that for a few years now and it's not fun. The first day Tastee Freeze was open this year I was so tempted to get an ice cream cone, even though it would mean misery the rest of the day. In the end I didn't.

Oh, and don't trust Lactaid. Every lactose intolerant person I've known has eventually experienced a critical failure with that stuff.

As for me, aside from the lactose thing, and a slightly greying beard, my knees aren't what they used to be. A few hours driving and it hurts to stand up. Getting through an entire film without getting up to stretch is sometimes quite painful.

when i was 18 i developed diabetes. i've been taking insulin by syringe.

i have also been going to the doctor's every 3 to 4 months since.

watching what i eat, exercising, avoiding salt, taking a baby aspirin a day, etc...

somethings in life you have no control over. somethings you do.

i didn't have a way to not get it. but i do have a way of managing it.

I do remember going to see the oncologist for my chemo treatments and I would look around the waiting room...everyone it seemed, except me, appeared to be at least 60 years old. I mean I was in a room full of elderly people and I sat there bald (lost my hair) and feeling out of place.

That's pretty much exactly how it was for me.

Prostate cancer was especially tough for me even though I knew it has a very high survivability rate. The primary treatment has a pretty good chance of leaving you sterile...which is fine for 95% of the patients who are 65+, but pretty devestating when you are 28.

At least you still HAVE hair... :)

on your head.

heck, i've got more hair on my shoulders and back than on my head now. :heh:

totally too much TMI...

but i am a hairy guy. a couple years ago. i had a cyst. anyway, it was painful to sit.

i ended up having it lanced. and then had some trouble in the healing...

so long story short ... a plastic surgeon ended up cutting me a new a..hole.

rectum hell, damn near killed him... :uhoh:

Hey, I resemble that remark! I didn't mind the grey, but eventually it got to where, no matter how I combed my hair, it looked like I was trying to cover up a balding spot. So I started buzzing it with electric clippers, no muss, no fuss. This past New Year's I decided to try something different (results at left).

Cholesterol is one of the many things where part of it is under your control and part of it is heredity. One friend of mine at work, she's real slim and works out every day. Before she started on medication, her total cholesterol was around 450! Same story for her mom. The meds bring it right back where it's supposed to be, though. Mine has been creeping up, year-by-year, unfortunately.

I used to be on Zocor. While I was on it I changed my eating habits (really cut down on those Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, I used to have one a day, now I only have one or two a week) and went on a low calorie diet. I also used to eat whenever I was feeling mad, sad and/or tired. Now I only eat when I am hungry and drink about 1 to 1.5 gallons of water a day. Before I started dieting I was 250 pounds, now I am down to 235 and am off the zocor.

I'm 51 years old. I'm 6'3 and weigh 340 pounds. I'm relatively inactive and mainline cheese. My total serum cholesterol is 156 and my arteries and veins are clear.

To make things even worse, I think game balance in an RPG is downright dumb. :D
