Strangest Rule Lawyering

I am curious if y'all have seen such a twisted rule interpretation.
Dear God, yes.
  • Did you know that Psionic Blow (sic) allows for unlimited damage dice being added to an attack? No, really! It doesn't say that you can do it only once!
  • 3.5 Druids can change to Wild Shape, cast Awaken on themselves, gain 1d3 charisma, morph back to normal form, and repeat for a nigh-unlimited charisma bonus!
  • Back in the olden days (AD&D), when someone got 5/2 attacks, they could attack 5 times on their first turn, and then skip their second.

*Sob* It was a good ruling! You were being mean to me! I'm never running LJ AGAIN! *runs away crying*

This is obviously a form of revenge for me killing your BBEG in the spycraft game in one round.

Unfortunately there are always considerably more people that want to play than people that want to DM so if you didn't get those DM's that are "sketchy, screwy, or just make up the rules as they go" you wouldn't get any game at all. So suck it up and be thankful someone has been kind enough to run a game for complete strangers.

Uh, yeah. Much better to play in a game with made up rules and a 'zero' on the fun scale than not play at all

A DM should go out of his way to make the game fun and memorable. If he can't do that its time to hang up the shield.

Or better yet if you think you can do better volunteer to DM! :D

Yes to all of this. :)

You speak filthy human lies!

Actually, I was about to say that noone's mind could be that warped, but then I looked back at some of the games I played in junior high.

My DM is convinced that simply being unarmed provokes an attack of opportunity. If you disarm someone, you get an attack of opportunity. If you stand next to someone without a weapon in your hand, you provoke an attack of opportunity.

I've tried explaining how he's wrong, but haven't managed to convince him yet. Maybe my next character will be a half-ogre with a spiked chain disarming everything within 20'. That ought to show him.

You're kidding, right? Please tell me you're kidding. It's not funny if you are. And he doesn't say its a house rule? DMs like this exhist? No way. I can't believe it. Not possible.

You _are_ kidding, right? Right? ;)

As according to plan, I smack the spectre, destroying it, and start to roll for the cleave and the DM interrupts -
"No, you can't cleave on that creature, because it doesn't drop. I've read this very carefully. The spectre doesn't drop, it dissipates, so you can't cleave."

You can always get you're revenge using one of my fellow gamer's tactics.

Me (the DM): The Glabrezu hits you...crits...and deals 136 points of damage.
dkilgo: No.

Sheesh. How am I supposed to argue against that? :D

I once played in a 2nd edition tournament game where the DM ruled that my 20th level wizard (we were all given high level NPCs for the game) was blinded by his own light spell because "he wasn't ready for the sudden flash of light". It also apparently blinded the rest of the party too. For one full round of combat (don't forget, this was a 2nd edition, 1 minute long combat round), I was unable to take any action.

He also ruled that when I tried to cast a fireball, there was no way of throwing it with enough precision not to hit the party with it if they were anywhere near the enemies. I can't remember how, but he seemed to have a reason why nearly none of my spells could be cast. He also didn't tell me beforehand. I come from a group that basically said, even if you were in melee with a monster, you could fireball with a center of "30 feet that way" and hit only the monster and not yourself. So, I said "I cast the fireball at the enemies" and he said alright, you hit these 3 party members. Same thing with the light, didn't tell me it would blind me, just told me afterwards.

After this I was afraid to cast spells, plus there was an interesting panel on at the convention about discussing Episode 1 of Star Wars, so I left the game midway to go there.
