Stupid=Not what the GM wants

I've noticed a trend in a Sci-Fi group I'm in. Doing something stupid is starting to mean "doing things in a way the GM don't want." Planing has come to mean "pumping the GM for information about the solution he's already come-up with."

Ugh.

Ugh is right.

Basically you've got a DM who railroads, which isn't so bad except that he apparently doesn't realize he's doing it.

If you were a D&D group, I'd suggest playing one of those large modules like Shackled City or whatever. That way you'd have your next year or more of gaming covered and you'd be playing a game that had been fully playtested.

No mega-modules for sci-fi though. Drat.

This is why I think it's important as a DM to develop situations for which you can already see multiple solutions. This way even if the PC's come up with something you didn't think of, you're already in the mindset that TMTOWTDI.

:] Sounds like what you have there is a PUPPETMASTER as a DM.

:D A good DM should at least be prepared to be suprised by innovative solutions by PC's. That's half the fun of being a DM.

I'd go with Cutters solution.

Dibs on the tin cup...

It's a tricky problem, since saying something to the GM about it is likely to cause trouble. If you think you can do it without hurting his feelings, I'd say go for it. Sit down with him and basically tell him what you told us, hopefully he knows how to take criticism.

Personally, I don't really bother to actually come up with ideas as to how the party is going to overcome obstacles; I just put them out there and react to the ideas and plans the party comes up with.

Mutiny and take up space piracy.

Seriously.

Or get killed trying. Either way, you'll be free!

Next time you come up with a "stupid" plan, walk through it, step by step, with your fellow players. Out loud. So that the DM gets to hear it in advance and come up with some sort of sensible reaction.

If he takes on board what you've said and simply reacts by blocking off your suggestions with dead ends and lethal monsters, then you've got a problem...
