Substitute sm. mithral shield for buckler?

First Post
So one of my players wields a bastard sword two-handed, and wears a buckler on one arm. Should I allow him to substitute a recently-found, small mithril shield in place of the buckler?

It is larger in size, but actually weighs 2 lb. less than a buckler.

So, if hes using the buckler and a two handed weapon does he get the -1 to attacks? Its not a second weapon. Does he then lose the +1 AC? Again, a two handed weapon is not a second weapon.

I say no to the first, but it's debatable. The AC is certainly lost.

That doesn't really have anything to do with my question...

There is a greater problem, any round he uses the sword he does not get the shield AC bonus.

What he needs to do is invest in a large animated shield.

The description of a buckler in the PH says that it's a "small metal shield."

Well, if they were actually the same thing, I imagine we wouldn't need to have both in the PHB.

As others have pointed out, one holds a shield. A Buckler is strapped to ones arm.
