Sunder. The spell!

I had this thought the other day. Can a spell be used to break an item or weapon. Ie Wizard walks up to door holds out hand and cast magic missle. Does dmg to lock and the door opens. presto. No lock pick needed. Any thoughts?

From the SRD: Magic Missile - "Inanimate objects (locks, etc.) cannot be damaged by the spell."

So, no on that part, but there are plenty of other ways for spellcasters to destroy objects. The shatter spell comes to mind.

From the SRD on damaging magic items: "Magic items should always get a saving throw against spells that might deal damage to them—even against attacks from which a mundane item would normally get no chance to save. Magic items use the same saving throw bonus for all saves, no matter what the type. A magic item’s saving throw bonus equals 2 + one-half its caster level (round down). The only exceptions to this are intelligent magic items, which make Will saves based on their own Wisdom scores.

Magic items, unless otherwise noted, take damage as normal items of the same type. A damaged magic item continues to function, but if it is destroyed, all its magical power is lost."

Magic item saving throws suck. In my opinion it is far too easy to destroy them.

*walks away grumbling about his character that just grappled a rust monster*

Remember that "attended items" are considered part of the character holding/wearing them, and thus can use that characters saving throw bonus.
