Superhero Movies

Hellboy is presently being turned into a film as well.

And I think Road to Perdition (the film) was based purely on Road To Perdition (the graphic novel). At least, that's what I read.

I also agree about modern day adults getting the chance to make films about their childhood heroes, eg comics.

Who knows, maybe when D&D has been around for 40 years we'll get a new wave of fantasy films!

There is also Hollywood trends. X-Men did well, so now everyone wants to make a Super Hero movie.
not exactly true. where the comic publisher 'giants' are concerned, DC's had movies made fairly consistantly through the 80's and 90's

Marvel just got their big push with the success of Blade

(actually, DC has always been successful with their characters* on the big screen, back to the 30's with serial movies based on Superman, Batman and Captain Marvel.)

Azure Trance - i believe Keanu Reaves signed on to be John Constantine

Tallarn - i'm not sure Hellboy's actually in production. it's movie rights were optioned years ago....

(* i was about to say 'PCs' :p)

My earliest memories of Captain Marvel or "Shazam!" was that Saturday Morning live-action series in the early 70's. It then spun off an Isis series.

It seem that Superman and Batman are about as popular a figure as Dracula. They seems to keep being used by Hollywood time and time again, always attracting new generations of fans.

Well, Road To Perdition was based on an American comic which in turn was an "homage" to the Lone Wolf & Cub Japanese comic.

Back when the movie opened, before I knew that the writers openly talked about the Lone Wolf influence, my first thought when I heard the reviews was "Hey, that sounds just like Lone Wolf & Cub!". :)

BTW, anyone else looking forward to Daredevil? I have to be honest and say that this is the only one of the next batch of superhero films that I can't wait to see.

Granted, The Hulk might be very interesting, depending on how they do the city destruction (think about CGI mountain crumbling and building smashing). Anyone know who the villain is on this one? Aside from the Leader and Abomination, the Hulk doesn't really have that deep a rogues gallery.

I don't know. I'm not all that happy with the casting on this one, especially Electra.

The colonel makes the most sense. He was always hunted by the military, and it worked well in the TV series.

the summary at IMDB doesn't name the villain, but Sam Elliott is playing Gen. Thunderbolt Ross!

"What in Sam Hill?" :D

I thought I had read somewhere that the Absorbing Man was going to be in the Hulk movie. Unfortunately, I think the plan was to make him Bruce Banner's dad.

I think that the rising popularity is due to the rising darkness of the world.. and many people dream of being a superhero that can fix it all.

Plus.. after Spiderman.. and the instant upgrade that old Peter got for his body... who wouldn't want to be one? eh? eh?

There's another issue involved, I think: business. I'm told there was a gap of many years where Marvel couldn't get it's licensing arranged properly, resulting in movies gettign optioned, but never completed. Eventually, Marvel got it's collective head screwed on straight, and movies actually started rolling...

That was certainly the case with Spider-Man. At one point, before the movie went forward, their were EIGHT organizations that claimed rights to the Spider-Man movie rights.

Of course, it came down to two biggies: MGM and Sony. At the exact same time, it seemed that these two companies were looking to settle their James Bond disagreement... and it ended with "You give us Bond, we'll give you Spidey". The Vin Deisel movie XXX was going to be Sony's first "James Bond" movie, but in the end was re-written so they could have Spider-Man. I think it ended up being a pretty good deal on their parts.

Blah blah blah.. crazy industry.
