D&D 4E Suppose 4e is released, do you buy it?

Would you buy 4e (now or later)?

  • Of course YES you fool! (already pre-ordering it, anyway)

  • I wouldn't want to, but failing my save would buy it anyway

  • Probably yes, if I can still use my 3.5 stuff with it

    Votes: 48 13.3%
  • Maybe, but only if it really improves the game, that I doubt

    Votes: 129 35.6%
  • Nope! I am tired of Wizards of the COST!

    Votes: 47 13.0%
  • No, and in retaliation I changed of RPG altogether!

I think the poll should include the option: "Maybe, but don't forget that my 3.5 books will still work just fine"

A lot of people seem to forget this option when talk moves toward a new edition.

Will/would I buy 4th edition? No. 3.5 is good enough for me and I see no reason for the release of a new edition anytime soon. Ten years plus down the road maybe.

that's why i'm here to remind them

My OD&D booklets work fine too.

Wombat's Gaming Evolution (select highlights)...

I started with OD&D in 1975. By 1979, I stopped playing D&D (never switched to AD&D).

Then came 3rd ed D&D -- I came back. I had great fun. I even picked up a good number of supplements and (briefly) subscribed to Dragon. Found wonderful books like Arcana Unearthed, The Book of the Righteous, and Skull & Bones.

4th ed? Nah. I haven't even upgraded to 3.5 or AE. And given the heavier emphasis on miniatures, I doubt I ever will. And in the meantime I am slowly, through the powers of the Dark Side, bringing my players over to Ars Magica.

You'll probably see me back around the time for 7th ed

Probably, if it's an improvement. Or I might continue with my 3.5 stuff. Or, I might begin the conversion of everything to Fantasy Hero.

Darn Skippy I'd buy it!!!

Only because I'm a mechanics junky. I just cant live with myself not knowing what sort of abuses they put the system through this time.

The problem I see is that with that many rules that are in 3.x it would be almost impossible to create a 4e that would justify the title "next new edition" (and not just 3.75e) and still be compatible with 3e. For this this the rules in 3e are already so dependant on each other that bigger changes could bring down the whole structure and make it inconsistent if you try to mix 4e sources with 3e ones.

I would buy it without hesitation if it was, essentially, the current game with the addition of many of the cool options and improvements WotC and the third-party publishers have come up with.

If it was a completely different game from the ground up, I'd have to take a really long, serious look at it first.

I wouldn't buy 4th edition books anytime in the next five years or so.

I might take a hissy-fit and swear off WoTC entirely and start up an old AD&D campaign or play 2nd edition Castles and Crusades ;) .

Unless there's a real push for simplicity with the rules, no. If they just add more complexity to the game, or even just maintain the current level of rule-structure, I will be more than happy to continue along with C&C.
