While I do like the Artificer, there are some people that don't, and from what I understand there are 2 main reasons for that.
Firstly, some people don't like the flavour. They don't want a Steampunky, Magitech style class in their fantasy games. Which is fair enough, it doesn't suit all campaign settings.
The other main reason is that it is a weak/mediocre class. It is an okay support class but not as good as a cleric or Bard in that role. It really only starts to come into its own when it reaches 10th level which is too late for many campaigns.
Now that doesn't mean that it can't be fun to play one. Personally, I am planning to play a Armourer Artificer at some point because I know I can have fun with the concept, even though I know it is not going to be the most powerful character at the table.
