Mind flayers are forbidden to use magic, but some disobey. When that happens, they are cut off from the Elder Brain, and that means death = oblivion. So they seek to become a Lich. But being a Lich requires a level of magical mastery that few mind flayers can get to, so they cheat.
At least 3 mind flayers can come together and create a “Priapt of Mind Trapping”. It links their minds and makes them into undead. It only lasts as long as they feed souls to it, the older the person the longer they’ll last.
However, if an Alhoon are ever destroyed, they don’t come back. Their minds go into the Priapt of Mind Trapping forever. If the Priapt is ever destroyed, all souls inside go to oblivion.
A true Mind Flayer Lich is a Mind Flayer who has reached the heights of magical power, and has learned how to become a full Lich. It is more powerful than an Alhoon.
