Swallow Whole as an action

Most monsters in the MM with this ability usually use it after they initiate a grapple with character. It then goes on to state that the monster can swallow the opponent on the next round after it has started the grapple. Is this a standard action for the monster or just one of it's attacks so that if it has more attacks it can use those as well the same round? Also, once a monster swallows an opponent are they still considered grappled(both the monster and the creature it swallowed I mean)?

Swallow Whole (Ex): If a creature with this special attack begins its turn with an opponent held in its mouth (see Improved Grab), it can attempt a new grapple check (as though attempting to pin the opponent).

Pin Your Opponent: You can hold your opponent immobile for 1 round by winning an opposed grapple check (made in place of an attack). Once you have an opponent pinned, you have a few options available to you (see below).

Thus use of the Swallow Whole special attack can be use in place of an attack.

Basically what I think the above is saying is that the swallowing creature retains its dex bonus to AC vs other creatures again. However, it can also mean that the swallowed character still has to succeed at a grapple check while in the stomach to pull said light weapon. Hope that 2H ftr had a dagger out prior to getting bit. Nasty!

Interesting thought comes to mind to create something that would require a light adamantium weapon to escape...

You need EPIC light slashing or piercing weapon in case of Tarrasque.

I am starting to think the hole idea of anything swallowing something that can still do damage to it is kinda silly. If anything was able to cut its way out it would most likely be vomited up well before it cut its way out. Always seemed goofy to me how they handle it.

There is actually a golem in the upcoming Tome of Horrors II book with the swallow whole special attack.

Does this strike anyone else as pretty horrible?

Character one is swallowed, he wasnt holding a light weapon and so has just about zero chance of being able to escape (most creatures that can swallow you are at least 2 size categories larger than you, good luck)

Character two is swallowed and was weilding a short sword. He can escape by poking his way out with a blace 3+ feet long.

So, you cant draw a few inches of dagger in order to attack, but you can get your 3'+ long blade that you must pierce with into position? I am lost as to how this makes any sense at all.
