Swashbuckling Cards

At the risk of being obscure, I think this one:
Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women.
Play: Your turn
Effect: You enter a barbarian rage, receiving all benefits and penalties. You will be winded after the rage ends.

could be retitled: "No. Rage... REALLY taking over..." :)

You think Conan is obscure? To this crowd? Wow...

Who (besides me ;)) knows where the quote "Oh, sure - just because I'm a toaster, I'm tone deaf!" comes from?

You think Conan is obscure?

No, I think the alternate I gave, which is from Mystery Men, might be obscure. Mr. Furious is a wanna be superhero who pretends his superpower is getting strong when he is mad. When fighting the villain, the conversation goes:
Mr. Furious: Rage... taking over...
Casanova Frankenstein: Yes, yes, we've heard that before.
Mr. Furious: No. Rage... REALLY taking over...

I'd have to guess the toaster quote is from Red Dwarf, which has an AI toaster, though I don't remember that quote specifically.

Another one:

You don't happen to have six fingers, do you?
Play: Any time
Effect: You happen upon someone you've been looking for, or at least someone who knows where he/she is.

No fair just guessing! But you're still right...
The toaster was lamenting the fate that put it's intelligence to work making mere pieces of toast. It was demonstrating what it had to offer the world of music before Lister shut it up. This is it's retort.

Anyone else out there familiar with Whimsy Cards? Similar idea to the Swashbuckling cards, but more generic...and older, by a decade or so.

Typical card would be something like:Erratic Behavior
Someone or something exhibits wild, unexpected behavior. Could be party members, enemies, mounts, spells, or equipment.

(There's a full list at: http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/byzantium/55/whimsy.htm )

I made up my own deck with 60 or so cards, each with two opposite possibilities on it -- like Incredible Success/Horrible failure. No descrpitive text, as it's up to the player of the card to interpret it. I've got my list somewhere about, if anyone's interested.

But basically, each player gets one card at the start of the session, and they can play it any point. If he plays it for strictly selfish reasons -- saving his own ass, or another PCs -- that's it. If he plays it to make the game more interesting, he get another card. If he comes up with something particularly brilliant (in the opinion of the GM and/or players), he gets two cards back.

Lots of fun, I've always found. And I particularly like giving players that extra chance to succeed when the odds are against them.

Okay, I'm durned if I can find it, but I could have sworn there was a HUGE thread wherein we generated all these cards.

In any event, you can download a pdf with a hundred and fifty or so of these cowboys at my website:

Swashbuckling Cards

Been using them for over a year now to great effect.

Yes, I had a friend who had the original ones, which I really dug. When they put out themed ones in wider distribution later and I bought them, however, I was a bit disappointed, as they sort of changed it for "campaign seasoning" to a surrogate plot driver. Blech.
