So what this all comes down to is that, of course, the 4E decisions WotC has made are theirs to make, but in what has happened here gaming has lost a lot. Beyond that, I think that WotC has actually hurt themselves in the process, and has made the transition to a new edition more difficult than it needs to be.
I can't pretend I understand why WotC has approached the license w/r/t 4e the way they have. I can only imagine that the d20STL and OGL just wasn't giving them what they wanted. And, yeah, I would have liked to see more of the d20 companies jumping on the bandwagon that would likely have been facilitated by just using the OGL for 4e.

Still, we don't know what the GSL is yet. There is also some talk (iirc) that the future revision of d20 Modern might be released under a different license, one either like the OGL or under the OGL itself.

All I can think to do is wait and see. At the very least, the OGL can't be retracted, so 3.5 and d20 Modern can be kept alive indefinitely by third parties, a la what Paizo is doing.

People defend their choices all the more because they are irrelevant in the larger scale of things. On most levels it may not matter whether I like the Cubs or the Sox, but you can sure as hell bet I'll be stared down or yelled at by some and cheered by others if I make what they feel is the "wrong" choice.

You're asking people to recognize the meaninglessness (or interchangeability) inherent in many of their choices. Historically I don't know if that's a winning proposition.

I hadn't realized it until I read this, but...yeah, I think that's what is leading me to consider giving up gaming after three decades. 4E is really driving home the message to me that most other players think D&D is "just a game," and they are going to take the community in that direction.

And I don't care to go with them, so maybe I'm on my own.

And D&D isn't much fun all by myself, so... :(

Honestly, when D&D becomes more than "just a game" to me... when it becomes more than a simple hobby that lets me enjoy wasting time with my friends, I'll probably quit playing.

I went by the FLGS today and bought Goodman Game's DCC #47.

Still trying to figure out what kind of statement I'm trying to send to whom because of that.

D&D is just one RPG among many I play.

RPGs are just one hobby among many I have.

This ain't no big deal.

That said, I'm loving the fact the 4e has made me optimistic. Me! And yeah, I'm kinda diggin' it.

my game of clue

There's something that's missing from this dialogue. A simple observation:

Tabletop games aren't just a game. It's time spent with your friends. It's an investment of creativity, time, and effort. No one has spent ten, fifteen, twenty years playing Monopoly with their friends every weekend. No one really remembers a good game of Uno or Clue ten years later, but a good campaign? A good adventure? A good climactic fight? Your favorite character? Your first character death?
that's the way people feel when "Surprise, new edition!"

Nostalgia and emotional attachment. It's a helluva thing.

I was 11 (I am now 42), I was playing clue with my sisters (8 and 9 years older than me) both of their boyfriends and my dad. I could not get clues to save my life, nothing. So, realizing I was sinking fast, I started following what others were asking for. I was able to deduce what was missing and making a relatively save guess, I won the game. Then, I showed them my list and how barely nothing was checked off. They were amazed.

Best game of clue...ever.

On topic. Good stuff Buzz. My problem is I wish they would make us chose sides. I don't have the time to game alot, but I find myself unable to decide which way to turn.

I love C&C for its simiplicity
I love the Paizo stuff, cause it looks so cool and slick.
I love the stuff from 4th edition cause it is the D&D Brand, and it sounds like a lot of fun.

I game maybe once a month or once every two months, so it really is going to come down to 1 of the three.

But yeah, our hobby is great and worthy of getting passonate about but no reason to draw battlelines.
