[SWSE] Are Jedi just plain better than everyone else?

Err General Greivious comes to mind. He isn't force sensitive and he slew a fair number of Jedi saber to saber.

Luke in RotJ is a prime example, especially in the Battle at the Pit of Carkoon, where he pretty much dominates the combat.

Luke fights a bunch of mooks, for the most part. He does manage to sunder Boba Fett's blaster, but only after spending a round escaping from being entangled.

Han is the one to take out Boba Fett - while blinded.

R2 is the only reason Luke got a chance to shine, and freed Leia (not to mention zapping the most annoying character in the scene...).

Leia takes out Jabba - with an improvised weapon.

Chewbacca spent a fair amount of time helping with mooks, but he also told Han where to swing.

Okay, Lando didn't do much...but he was only one of them who kept an intact disguise. I think Lando is lower-level than most of the other characters...including R2.


Overall, while Luke is the flashiest, Han and Leia took out the main bad guys. And both did so while at a disadvantage.

The lightsaber thing is more Jedi exclusive because they're Jedi weapons. Its just extremely rare for anyone else to make and use them. I mean, if you can't redirect blaster bolts, you're pretty much dead in the galaxy when you've got a lightsaber when everyone else has long range blasters.

Note that most lightsabers used by non-Jedi are taken from Jedi, so they aren't doing the attuning, which would translate to the +1 bonus that Jedi get in the system for using their crafted weapons instead of someone else's.

All I'm saying is that a Lightsaber is a freaking great weapon, and as written there's no real reason anyone who expects any trouble at all and who can afford it shouldn't have two.

They're extremely powerful, the only effective defense against a lightsaber is... another lightsaber (so yet another reason to keep one), they're extremely easy to keep hidden on your person and still available at a moment's notice, making them the absolute perfect concealed weapon.

Hell, even if you never use it in combat, it's the freaking swiss army knife of the universe! Blast door jammed? Saber. Need to cut down a tree? Saber. Need to start a fire? Saber. Need to cut the power conduit before the damaged reactor goes critical? Saber.

There should be a lightsaber in every first aid kit in the universe, it's perfect for sterilizing, cauterizing, amputating and, hell, all three at once, and practically painless to boot.

As written, the only real barrier stopping anyone from owning a saber is the cost and the fact that so few are manufactured. The cost, frankly, should be negligible to all but the lowest-level mooks, and for such an incredibly useful and versatile weapon there's no reason that there shouldn't be three dozen different corporations all producing their own brand of 'em.

Basically, as written, the idea that a lightsaber is the exclusive purview of Jedi and those who've defeated them stretches all sense of verisimilitude. The only possible way to actually justify their limited usage is that only Jedi are capable of making them, and only in extremely limited quantities.

Now, game-mechanically in Saga, a lightsaber is a great weapon for a Jedi (or anyone who has access to the lightsaber combat talent tree). For anyone else it's kind of meh (your stock melee Wookie soldier does better with a vibro-ax).

Again, the lightsaber is NOT the perfect weapon for a non-Jedi.

Star Wars is a world of long range, blaster technology. ONLY Jedi have the ability to defend against them, and everyone else is basically dead. You have to get in close, and that's dangerous because it means people get free shots against them.

For a Jedi, that's fine because they can defend...anyone else? No way.

Well...where are you going to get one?

Its not like the Jedi Order sells them, or the schematics for that matter. Carrying around a lightsaber signifies a person as a Jedi. Do that in an order where there are Jedi around and you're likely to get called on it, and do that in the Rebellion Era and you're likely to turn up dead.

Honestly, as a whole, the thing that stops the galaxy from using the lightsaber is that its seen as a symbol of the Jedi. They're scarce weapons as it is, and so few people in the galaxy are actually trained to use them anyway.

Not really.

Logically they aren't that great due to the proliferation of blaster technology. There is rarely ever time for someone to get in close enough to USE a vibro weapon, and the only reason Jedi can do it is because they have the Force to help them redirect blaster fire and defend themselves.

The whole, don't bring a knife to a gunfight situation, really. Except the knife in this case is weightless, expensive to craft, and rare.
