T1: A Visit to Spelding Square [Completed]

OOG: 2-handed Str 16 Power Attack 4 should be 1d8+12 (1.5xStr is 4, +2xPA penalty is 8); I don't know where 1d8+7 comes from. Since the lost two rolls were in fact misses, which gives rather a wide swing in outcomes, I re-rolled... and wouldn't you know, again rolled a hit with maximum damage, so the outcome remains exactly the same as posted. But do try to be careful!

Pendrake's longsword clatters to the ground as he switches to a two handed grip on his backup weapon, and Pendrake delivers a mighty pummeling blow to the creature that is strong enough to break through the tough leathery outer skin. Gobbets of black flesh spatter in all directions, and the spiked ball cuts deep slices... slices that tear and extend as the creature writhes, ripping itself apart.

One half, as the pair already puff and swell up to almost the size of the original single creature, moves off west cautiously.[sblock=Midias]Midias manages to keep his eye on the creature as it moves, but it almost immediately passes out of his view behind the market stall.[/sblock][sblock=Ngikhnit]The newly separated creature slips between nothingness into invisibility the moment it moves off, though in any case the market stall blocks the view.[/sblock][sblock=Peladus]The creature gives Pendrake no opportunity to attack as it slithers away west, then turning to skirt the edge of the market stall.[sblock=Map]

[/sblock][/sblock][sblock=Pendrake]The creature gives no opportunity for attack as it slithers away - and the moment it moves, it slips between nothingness into invisibility.

OOG: also, Pendrake is aware that his blow did less damage than it might have, i.e. the creature has DR 5 that is not overcome by piercing or bludgeoning damage.[/sblock][sblock=Quozen]It slips between nothingness into invisibility, giving Quozen no opportunity to strike at it as it withdraws.[/sblock]OOG: 15 10 damage; but the creature splits again. The newcomer rolls well enough for initiative to act immediately, and withdraws, managing not to provoke an AoO.

The map is otherwise unaltered. Peladus is up...

pendrake goes through another sieries of stomach spasums as he points north and sputters out "Nord, zhat vay?" and (as part of a move) pulls out his morning star, a weapon that looks like a ball on the end of a stick with spikes on on the metel ball, and puts away his long sword.

OOC:
It takes a standard move to put a weapon away? Right? or can i put it away as part of the same move action?

ok, just found this:
[sblock=Draw or Sheathe a Weapon]

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving a stored item.

If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one. [/sblock]

so it sounds like I can switch out his long sword for his morning star!

OOG: it's always a move action to sheathe a weapon. Drawing of weapons can be accomplished more quickly. But since Pendrake handed off the sunrod to Quozen just now, he can draw his morningstar and keep his longsword in his other hand. I'll assume that for now. He can always drop the sword as a free action before attacking with the morningstar in two hands, if he prefers.

You imply Pendrake is moving somewhere - "(as part of a move) pulls out his morning star" - but don't say where.
[oog] I don't think the sword goes "clatter to the ground" asthe above posts of previous discussion so states. [/OOG]

"Not just edged weapons, then. Now, let's see if you like magic or not."

Peladus steps backwards (OOC: 5ft step to the East) and casts Magic Missile at the creature just in front of him.

OOC: Was going to attack the one just about to disappear into the darkness, then realized that I don't have line of effect. Actually, if he moves 5 ft NE he may. Trouvere, if he has line of effect to the further one, he'll take that attack. If not, he'll stick to the closer one as described above.

Magic missile (no miss chance) (1d4+1=3)

[sblock=OOG, Scott]Clarifying earlier point. My quoted paragraph seems quite clear to me, but to reiterate:

In the previous round, Pendrake was still nauseated and had only a move action to spend. He used it to head north while bringing out his morning star. That left him with no further actions to deal with the longsword (other than dropping it at some point during the move), so he had a weapon in each hand.

Then this round he attacked with the morning star 2-handed, without specifying how he rid himself of the longsword to do so. I assumed, then, that he simply dropped it as a free action. Otherwise, he would have had to use a move action to sheathe it, which would have provoked an AoO.

If Pendrake would never have treated Ilk's Bane so roughly, we can retcon that he sheathed it as a move action before attacking with the morning star, and I can roll an AoO. Chances are it will miss, and it's not as though Pendrake doesn't have HP to spare, and using up the creature's AoO for this round might be helpful for other PCs (assuming it cannot take more than one).

Or finally, Pendrake can have attacked with the morning star in one hand, for correspondingly less damage (11 instead of 15).

Which would you prefer?[/sblock]Peladus puts some distance between himself and the nearer creature, and directs a bolt of magical energy unerringly past both Pendrake and Quozen.

OOG: yes, Peladus has LOE to UT3 if he steps NE. But a caster level check against SR 15, please.

[sblock=Peladus]Peladus' missile strikes the creature, which shudders and seems to draw in on itself. It is difficult to tell, but perhaps it is now severely injured.

OOG: 3 damage to UT3.[/sblock][sblock=Pendrake, Quozen]Peladus' magic missile impacts with something unseen right beside a corner of the market stall, giving away the third creature's position.

OOG: that is, 4 squares west of Quozen and 2 squares south.[/sblock]OOG: maps as before, except that Peladus has stepped NE. Midias...

[sblock=OOG] you hit the nail on the head as to my condern when you asked if Pendrake would have treated Ilk's bane with such cavalier care. I think that he would have held onto ilk's bane and struck single handed subtracting 4 from the damage. I bet that would not have changed the creature spllet, but even so, I think the split shoud happen any way for the story continuity.

[sblock=OOG]Okay. So the damage is 8+3+4-5=10. I'll edit above, but there is no effect on continuity, except that UT1 and UT3 have slightly more HP each.[/sblock]

Midias whacks the creature solidly, again sending tiny wriggling black slugs spattering to the ground. This time, though Midias' morning star's spikes tear the flesh too, it remains in one piece.

OOC: 4 damage. Ngikhnit...[sblock=Ngikhnit]It's been a while since the last map update.
