D&D 5E Tall's PotA Campaign - IC

OOC: scrying I think increases in accuracy if you have a item relating to the target.

Duran sighs he gets the distinct feeling that the captive is going to die again... Why must everyone keep dying? They certainly couldn't let him go given the ambush they just faced.

"It would appear the town isn't safe neither can we stay here. I do not wish to kill this man but he is of no use to us. And. We cannot let him go." at this point Duran is unable to make eye contact with anyone.

OOC: Is there any where near by that we could hide out in forest cave etc?

“We could leave him tied to a tree and let fate decide,” Errol told Duran. “Or unconscious. It would give us a few hours, at least. If you don’t want to bring him back to Red Larch.”

"I imagine if we left him like that he would die anyway and slowly at that. Atleast we can make it quick." Duran sighs he thought he had put this life behind him.

Ilvellios gestured the group out of earshot of the captives. "It seems like we do not want to kill them, so let's bring them back and hand them over to the law. As for the spy, how about a bluff?

We could claim the captives actually are able to identify the man, make that the talk of the town and try to flush him out. Either he will try to kill the bandit, or he will skip town towards the water base. We either have men waiting or, if we don't want to split the party, track him once a citizen goes missing.

It's a gamble though, we risk the water temple being told of what just happened.."

Duran shrugs at the plan as good a plan as any he had heard but the old man couldn't help but wonder if there was more than one spy and this was going to back fire."I could do with a short rest, maybe a hour or so if we are heading back to town, I feel like we may be needing my shape shifting prowess.

OOC:
Duran can't fly yet, can he? A bird would be excellent, flying above town to see who leaves in a hurry!

IlRC the town isn't walled, is it? So one can leave from any direction, otherwise we could man the gates..

“That is a good plan,” Errol agreed with Ilvellious. “Though let him stew a while, thinking we mean to kill him. It is less than he deserves. I think it will be hard to notice a single citizen has gone missing. No, we are probably going to have to split up and watch the roads into and out of town. I agree, a rest would be useful before we trudge back to town.”

"A rest is a good idea. The more I think about it, the more problems I foresee..
We don't want to split the party too much, once the spy departs then we'll want to get the others before pursuing, which will give him a lead. Also, he knows our descriptions, and may spot us watching for people leaving town. Now there are few people we trust, but I'm inclined to think that street children may be too young to have been indoctrinated into the cult. What if we paid several groups of kids to play by the town exits and come & get us at a central location when someone leaves?

Alternately, we could just conduct some more enquiries to try and identify a suspect, then obtain a sample of his handwriting through deception or burglary?"
