D&D 4E Tell us what you like and don't like about 4e

I really love the new 72-page prestige class descriptions, that tell us what color underwear they wear, their favorite flowers, and brief (34 page) notes on how to role-play them in every imaginable situation (including peanut allergies and luau skirmishes). The sample characters at every level are also really great.

The new simplified stat block that is 10x longer than the monster's full Monster Manual description is another great improvement over the old 3.x format.

The best improvement has to be the new favored class rules for races, though. I like the fact that every race (except half-elves) take a 20% experience penalty per class they have other than the race's preferred class. I'd hate to see a non-wizard elf or non-fighter dwarf character, for example, and this should really nip that kind of nonsense in the bud. Changing the half-orc's favored class to paladin and assigning the human a favored class of commoner was just icing on the cake.

And this is awesome, the monster manual doesn't tell you anything about the monsters till you manage to find the collectable miniature that goes with it. And since 3e didn't go far enough in making the monster names easy to work with - I mean really, Osyluth and Gelugon were just too hard to use, and they turned them into bone devils and ice devils - those I can remember. But! 4e even went further! Eladrin are now Fairy Angels, Guardinals are now Furry Angels, and so forth.

And now more with the 4e MM itself, as it turns out the MM entries are all ultra 1e nostalgia with one line of descriptive text, super inspiring names like Type I demon, and movement rates in inches.

Oh, and they simplified alignment to Law and Chaos now.

I like what they did with the economic factors in the 4e DMG. Characters without at least 20 ranks in knowledge economy, skill focus and Improved skill focus knowledge economy, and 5 levels of accountant have the DM roll on the random d10 000 economy chart to see how the exchange rates, over sea corn oil, and cheap orc made bras are effecting the daily price.

I like that they brought back electrum pieces and have exchange rates like in Harry Potter to bring those fans to the game. 17cp=1 sp; 23 sp= 1ep; 2ep=1gp; 13gp=1pp

See, I didn't care for that. It's too much like real life. Spoils the versimilitude (sp?).

Well, the side bar did say this was just a place holder system until the book Fantasy Economies comes out next June. Personally, I can't wait for the Fiendish Tax Collector prestige class.

And what about that new sub-race of Elves, the Keebler Elves? +4 bonus to Craft (baking)?

But I really don't like the Smurf race entry. The description doesn't do it justice, although I got a kick out of the +10 racial bonus to Hide checks when trying to be spotted against a blue sky.

The prestige classes need a total overhaul. Dookiemancer? Loud Screaming Person? Hypersensitive Artist? Dumpster Diver? Who comes up with this garbage?

And while I approve of taking Flaws out of Unearthed Arcana and placing them in the core rule book, they could've come up with some better ones than Drools On Pillow While Sleeping, Clears Throat Way Too Much, and Leaves Toilet Seat Up.

I think 4E will spell the end of D&D as we know it.

Did you happen to catch that the ultrodaemon (thank goodness they god rid of that other difficult name, "yugoloth") has been reduced to a 4 HD creature with a Cha of 7? That perfectly summarizes the fact that they are the greatest manipulators of the multiverse and the leaders of their kind.

Well, you have to take a look on how they are supporting low level play in the new edition. Goblins are woirth like 10xp, and yet a character needs 10,000 xp to gain second level. The new formular for gaining levels is current level squared times ten thousand. so 10k, then 40k, then 90k, then 160k, then 250k etc. I do like that monsters are not worth a flat rate of XP with an optional bonus XP dependant on CR.

That was a good idea. It should keep most folks busy until the Epic Level Handbook (levels 5+) comes out a year later. It was a sound design decision since most focus groups indicated that most DMs start their campaigns over at 6th level anyway.
