Open Call for Writers and Artists!
Khan's Press is announcing an Open Call for writers and artists for the upcoming April issue of their quarterly magazine, the Tempest!

We are looking for writers and artists to contribute to the following articles:

-Spells of Air. Creativity a must - these won't be run-of-the-mill spells! Spells should be written in concordance to the 3.5 rules.

-Havoc Feats. Feats geared towards raising a little mayhem in the game. Trickster feats, chaos feats, killer combat feats - you name it! Feats should be written in concordance to the 3.5 rules.

-Fang, Fury, and Fear will include a selection of new monsters that are the result of a wizard's experiments gone wrong. Monsters should be written in concordance to the 3.5 rules.

-Sir Reginald Halfbottom's Chop Shoppe is a new running article that will detail modified weapons and alternate weapon use. Weapon modifications will be more than just simple modifications - they will redefine the weapon! Weapons should be written in concordance to the 3.5 rules.

-ElfClash Freebies will include free information on ElfClash and it's world. If you have picked up the book, feel free to submit new spells, feats, and other supplemental material for the article!

All submissions will be read, and those accepted will be notified by email (be sure to include this in your submissions!). Those that submit items to the magazine will be credited for their submissions, as well as given a complimentary copy of the issue. Should someone submit a short fiction story, entire articles of more than 1,000 words, or otherwise contribute to the magazine (with art, etc), he or she will be entitled to a percentage of royalties from the issue (based on amount of work submitted).

Submissions are due by Monday, March 15, 2004. Late submissions will not be accepted, though may be re-submitted for the next issue. Purchase of Tempest, Issue 1 is not required, but it would be helpful to see how the magazine is structured.

Submissions for writing should be emailed to Maggie McCall at mpitgroup@yahoo.com. Please put "Tempest Writer Submission" in the subject line and indicate which article you are submitting for. Attachments not accepted (put the submission into the body of the email, please), except with longer submissions (in which case, please send me a query email with your proposal and you wil be told how to submit from there).

Artwork submissions should be directed to Sean Murray at kaledor@yahoo.com. Please send a query email with your proposal prior to sending files or a link to an online portfolio. If your proposal or portfolio is accepted, you will be contacted. Please put "Tempest Artist Submission" in the subject line and indicate which article you would like to illustrate for. Black and White OR Color work is accepted.

Thank you all very much, and happy submitting!
Maggie McCall and Sean Murray, Editors of the Tempest

word counts

I could possibly contribute to Spells of Air and Fang, Fury, and Fear. How many words do you need, exactly?

I'm not the writing-editor, but I can definitely say that we are very flexible. In our last issue, looking at the Feats Article we had (on average) 150 words per feat, but had word counts of 50 to 300 depending on the feat! In the Magic Items Article we had (on average) 400 words per entry, but had as little as 250 and as many as 560+. If you've picked up the last issue you'll see that some authors included more history in their articles than others and that can really add to the word count.

I do a lot of the final layout and can say that we can handle most any word counts. So the simple answer is "necessary and sufficient" -- include as many words as it takes to detail Monster or Spell.

If this doesn't help or you've got something more specific you can contact Maggie McCall at mpitgroup@yahoo.com-- she's the writing editor but doesn't visit messageboards often...

Deadline coming!

Just reminding interested parties that the deadline for the OPEN CALL is a little over a week away.

MARCH 15

If you have any interest in submitting work, please contact the editors (Sean and Maggie, emails above), with your ideas and they will work with you on timeframes.

Which of the areas that you first mentioned are you folks most interested in seeing submissions on please? Or is it still all open?

Honestly, we would still be taking submissions on any of the topics. Anything that is unusable for the current issue could/would be bumped to the following... With that said, I know that we are definitely still looking for submissions to:

Fang, Fury, and Fear (new monsters)
and Spells of Air are still open for a few submissions

And

Loki's Grab Bag is still open and can include miscellaneous feats, items, spells, etc, especially with a chaos or April Foolsy theme.

Now Closed

The Tempest Open Call is now Closed

Thanks for all those that submitted material. If you have submitted something and NOT be contacted please send us a gentle reminder...

If you still have ideas and missed our deadline, feel free to email us and we can discuss possibily working you into a future issue or product!! Also, be on the lookout for future open calls. We received many submissions so will probably being using this method again!

Thanks, and look for the newest issues to hit the virtual shelves in April!
