temple prostitution

In the Herodutos accounts of Temple Prostitution the following description is given:

"A woman who has once taken her seat is not allowed to return home till one of the strangers throws a silver coin into her lap, and takes her with him beyond the holy ground.

When he throws the coin he says these words- "The goddess Mylitta prosper thee." (Venus is called Mylitta by the Assyrians.) The silver coin may be of any size; it cannot be refused, for that is forbidden by the law, since once thrown it is sacred."

Our boy Herodutos claims that this is a requirement of all women, and that you can't leave the temple district until you've been bought and travelled to the man's house. This would seem to chime in with the earlier article on the original value of a shekel.

The thing to decide is whether this is temple that is also a house of prostitution or the house of prostitution is the temple.

Becuase if the purpose of the prostitution is to fulfill rituals than the 'price' is really going to be about what sort of ritual you want fulfilled and how many bells and whistles you want. Most of the rituals are likely to be very cheap but also heavy formalized.

In the Summerian and Babylonian myths there was a class of prostitutes that seems to have been slightly different from the activity described by Herodotus. From my readings they had more of a professional priestess demeanor and were keepers of lore, law, and culture who also made themselves available to people who they thought needed it or who their superiors thought could benefit by it. There may have been ritual coin exchange involved in this and they seem to have earned some money from teaching and keeping themselves as companions. This is the sort of prostitute who would have lured Enkidu to come in from the desert and ally himself to Gilgamesh.

Also the sort of priestess who would have been in charge of enacting and coordinating the spring fertility rituals. These vast ceremonies were both important means of signifying the relationship between the secular and clerical authorities and primitive means of population control as the spring rites would have ensured that many babies were born just before winter when the population had more time to care for them. One thing to keep in mind is that this sort of thing becomes rarer as urban life becomes freer and laws and taboos that can restrict sexual activity become rarer.

Good luck with this. The early cultures of the fertile crescent from which we are most familiar with this sort of activity are particularly fascinating to me and do make great settings for games.

I am certain that there would have been a fair amount of male prostitution. This would have contributed to the spread of genetics and good will generally, plus men make good whores, and religious institutions are popular places for people who don't fit into the norm of the rest of the culture. Sterile women, for instance, would also be likely candidates for the priesthood.

i am not interested in male prostitution. when i get the description of the religion up hopefully you will see why.

But the temple should have other business. I have a cult (posted in plot forum at one time) Sisterhood of the Night, that was female vampires that would provide healing for the price of blood and take in young girls (who later would be turned into vamps). Males were taken and trained as guards/spys but most were killed!

You should define all functions.

I, personally, have had it up to here with temple prostitution. Those damn clerics, casting their cure, restoration and raise dead spells on anyone who waves a spare gold piece in their general direction. Noone has any dignity anymore, that's for sure.

They control beer, wine and tobacco too! :)

I really want to go into my Jamm' Jake Jamboree Street Preacher of Sin BBS handle.

Thanks for posting this Doc. I was just looking for some information to quote on this point. What you mentioned is the historical form of temple prostitution, not the "Harem of Priestesses" idea. Now, there's no reason that someone couldn't make a cult like that in your game, but it isn't the same thing as what actually happened in Mesopotamia, etc.

While I have nothing o fnotable value to bring to this conversation for I am truly ignorant of the subject, both historically and fictionally.

I do encourage you all to keep throwing ideas out! I an very interested and this concept completely fills several plot holes that I never realized were there!

Thank you.

Temple prostitution is still practiced in India.

I think there should be a very good reason to have temple prostitution. Traditionally I suspect it was a way for families to get rid of unwanted girls, who would be then taken into these temples.

In Thailand still, northern fmilies in the poorer areas of Thailand would send their children to work as prostitutes to send money to the family, and maybe meet a nice man in the process.

In Finland at least, a prostitute on average costs 40 to 60 euros, while an escort costs 200 euro. I am not a prostitute but I work occasionally as an escort.

But back to the discussion: What is the function of temple prostitutes in the society. Do they bestow the temple blessing on the man? How exactly are they chosen? Do the women line up and the men choose who is to be their choise for the night? Does the men line up and the women choose their partner for the night? What is the position of a temple prositute? Are they unclean creatures that are punished through sex or are they divine concubines which have a very strong influence upon the society?

Is fertility an important aspect of the game world. Or are they all hunter gatherers. Are women rare? Is fertile males rare? Is sex a natural portion of a persons life or is it an unnatural act (like modern religions forbid sex outside of marriage)?

Is every woman expect to serve for say a year in a temple? Is it expected of men as a right of passage to sleep with a temple prositute? Does sleeping with a temple prostitute constitute a way on bestowing divine favors upon a person (like a farmer needs to get fertile fields, so he goes to the temple prays and pays for the prostitute so he may get a richer harvest)?

A culture in my campaign has religious prostitution. It's handled a bit differently than I've seen mentioned, at least as regards to price.

Thing about religion is that it often doesn't make a lot of sense, at least economically. The point being that in the religion of Hinsua, on Barsoom, there's no price difference between various prostitutes (there are both male and female). The value of the money exchanged is purely ritualistic and thus always the same, no matter who or what is involved. Access is handled through physical means -- high-born people stay in the noble district, where poor folks just aren't allowed, so they never have to worry about dirty labouring hands grubbing up their prostitutes.

But everyone has to take a turn peddling their ass, and has to contribute a certain amount to the gods (that is, turn a certain number of tricks). Some folks find they like the life (you get fed and housed and it's not the worst life in the world) and stay in for as long as they like, as long as they can keep producing.

The net result is a culture where virginity is almost unheard-of and so you don't have anything like the same taboos and mores that other societies have, so many of which are built around determining and maintaining chastity.

My players certainly had an eye-opener when they stopped in for supplies!

I think most people are missing the point that temple prostitution was a religious/magical ritual, not a business run by a temple. Maybe it costs nothing - but only happens during special ceremonies. Maybe the "fee" isn't money at all.

My understanding is that scholars are starting to believe that Herodotus's account is historically untrue--he wrote about many things that he got wrong, or that didn't exist but were thought to be true.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't rip him off for a game, of course! :)
