Temporary housing in Vancouver BC

I am in one hell of a logistically crappy situation. But first, the all important background.

I have a good job lead in Vancovuer BC. I had initially thought it was already an offer, but it appears that someon on that end misspoke. In any event, I was down in Vancouver for an in person interview, and I am convinced that it went well. In any event, I should have a yea / nay by next week.

Now, my personal logistics at this moment, suck. I needed to get myself out of Ottawa by the end of October. That part is pretty much handled. A sublet has already been arranged for my apartment in Ottawa, so I am no longer on the hook for the rent here. A mover will be by on the 29th to move my stuff into storage, and the moving company will hold my stuff for a month or two without charge. I have solid arrangments for where I end up if this job offer goes negative.

My concern is that if I do get the job offer, I will want to live in Vancouver to start the new job asap. I have a potential plan that would at least buy me some time to find a place, but it is looking like my initial plan would be untenable.

So, I need some ideas about what the hell I might be able to do in terms of finding a place to live in Vancouver for about 30 days while I look for more long term arrangements. A gaming forum is not the ideal place to look for this advice, but given my timeframe, I intend to get all the input I can.

Much less urgent now.

Looks like my Plan A has been confirmed as viable. But it will still be good for me to have a few plan B's on hand.

With the Olympics coming and people being tossed out of low income housing to make way for Olympic visitors it is tough in Van. Count yerself lucky to find a place where you don't have to mortgage your arm.

I doubt anyone has been kicked out of low Income Housing for the olympics yet (I mean come on, it's in 2010), but I think that's the plan.

I hope it's the plan anyways.

If it cleans up our neighbourhood even more than the efforts they are making now, I'll be overjoyed...Adios Crack whores!

Well, Vancouver can be pretty damn expensive. The current plan is I move down there and start a new job. The problem is that I dont yet know if I will get offered the job. The hiring process for the company involved is very much convoluted. Also, I need to get out of my current apartment here in Ottawa by the end of September.

I am lucky that Plan 'A' for staying in Vancouver worked out. I have a friend who is changing apartments, but has possession of it until the end of October. However, it seemed for a bit that plan A might not have worked out.

Still, I am optimistic that I will manage to get an offer, but its not something I can count on. Even so, staying in Vancouver for a month with no job beats the hell out of my plan of last resort (back home with parents in Denholm Saskatchewan), with respect to job hunting.

I would suggest that if you find yourself without accomodations. You simply take the skytrain out to New Westminister (a suburb of Vancouver) and just start walking around the area looking for rental accomidations. New West has an increadable concentration of cheap (relatively) apartments all within easy walking distance of the skytrain stations.

Just a word of warning though New West does have a higher then normal crime problem (primarily theft, and vandilism with very little violent crime).

Once you have been here for a while you will have a better idea of where you want to live and what you can afford.
