Well, I just finished reading this book, and the details about Israel, Egypt, Canaan, and Babylon, and I can say that the way the background is presented is pretty neutral. In some cases, its given a slightly positive spin, and in others a more negative one (esp in some of the sidebars that describe the conquering practices of the Israelites in some instances), but overall it reads more like a well-written summary of history, culture, and religion than propaganda. I found it to be very entertaining and enlightening to read.

What about the conquering practices of other peoples? It's not like the ancient Israelites were the only people running around the Near East waging bloody war and committing atrocities.

Most everything I saw in these sections could be yoinked (with little to no tweaking) for any D&D game, and a lot of it could be used for FR's "Old Empires" of Mulhorand, Unther, & Chessenta, or GH's far western "arabic flavored" realms like Ull and Zief.[/B]

It had better. Scott Bennie wrote the Old Empires book, one of the finest D&D products to date.

Waiting for Old Empires 3e, er Teastament, to appear locally. :)

Oh, there are plenty of atrocities to go around, believe me. ;) Its just that of the 100 or so pages of world material, about 40 of it is dedicated to Israelite history, so we get more of their bloodthirstyness than anybody else.

I just bought the book today for my wife. It's a very well done sourcebook. I look forward to using it.

Although I'm not sure exactly which nation gnomes should be natives of. Any suggestions?

Wow! This book sounds great.

It's currently on my "right after I get the 3.5 books" list. It may very well be the first 3rd party d20 product I buy.

Ah. That makes sense. I would have been surprised to find out that Testament skewed the historical record. As already mentioned, I've been quite impressed with the advance press and information I've read.

Looks like this will be a good purchase after all.

As to the "facts" of Israel and Egypt, may I suggest Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman's "The Bible Unearthed", expecially Chapter 2: "Did the Exodus Happen?" If nothing else, the existence of this train of thought, from within Israel even, serves to illustrate that the "facts" of this case might not be as stubborn as Harry Truman's.

To preserve this thread from possible doom, those interested in this part of the discussion should probably continue in private email.
