My maps have Israel and Egypt on them. Hmm. I'd've thought the late 1990s current enough.

All roads don't lead to Rome, Georgia. A name often has little to do with a culture/history.

However, there is more than just a common name when considering, for example, the Egypt in northeastern Africa.

But not much more, considering the successive waves of invaders and cultures that have come through Egypt since the time period covered by Testament. While the rural life patterns of Egyptian peasants have changed rather less over time, the overall culture of the place has been altered enormously from then to now.

As far as that goes, just about all of the nations described in Testament no longer exist in any functional sense. Ancient Israel was destroyed by invaders and ultimately done away with by Rome. Pharonic Egypt's last significant vestiges were gone by the end of the Roman period, save for some material culture and some Coptic elements that preserved bits of language. The rise of Islam radically changed the face of the region, further distancing the current situatio from the ancient past.

While it is true that many of the issues that plague the modern Middle East are very old, few of them are actually ancient.
