Thaumaturgist Planar Cohort- Lawful Neutral options?

RUMBLETiGER

Adventurer
I'm toying around with an Archivist Summoner build (I make far more characters for fun then I'll even have time to play in games, but anyway...) and it's looking like a Lawful Neutral, archiologist adventurer personality.

It's shaping up to be an Archivist7/Thaumaturgist5/Archivist8. The Thaumaturgist's 5th level ability (Hit at character level 12) provides a cohort from the Planar Ally spell line. Planar Ally states, in part, "If you serve no particular deity, the spell is a general plea answered by a creature sharing your philosophical alignment."

So, besides Modrons, Formians and Inevitables, what might LN options be for an up-to-12 HD buddy for such a character? All 3.5 books are fair game.

There are the Mercanes, of course! They fit your character pretty well. What else... Justicators, basically Lawful Neutral antichaos angels. Then Bladelings. They are not a strong race, and quite xenophobic - depending on the kind of campaign ran, that could make them perfect^^ Oh, Visilights - those things are badass, look badass, and want to look badass. Good pick. And the Unravellers! They are born on the edges of planes and can separate matter into their basic components.

Well, I'm out.

A Mercane seems cool, just looked them up. A Justicator or Bladeling could be incredible depending upon the campaign, I could see either as an excellent bodyguard. Visilights looked kinda squishy, but their CHA drain ability is pretty cool. The Unraveler.... That's pretty incredible. Definitely a creature I'd rather have on my side then against!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, Really opened my eyes to a few more things out there.

As I was looking earlier today, I came across the Rust Dragon and was pretty satisfied with that as an option as well.

If you need more convincing on the visilight, look them up under their original name in 2e, the "parai". DiTerlizzi's artwork for them was awesome (a sorta Angelina Jolie as a cenobite look). I'm utterly clueless why WotC decided to randomly alter their name in 3.5.

Also, if you're game for PF sources as well, you've got the axiomites as well (TGB and Bestiary 2).

Half-Celestial/Half-Fiend/Aasimar/Tiefling with class levels.

If I ever played this character (As I said, I make much more characters than I get around to playing) I'd discuss with whoever's my DM about how much customizing options I'd have to calling a Planar ally. Building a classed outsider from the ground up sure would be convenient!

My Google-fu cannot find info on Parai, or images.

I always thought that you have to call a stock monster, but then I saw in Book of Exalted Deeds example champions of the outsider big-shots who can be called via Planar Ally and they were classes NPCs and monsters.
I would do it like I do it with the cohort from Leadership - the player can give a suggestion what he would want the NPC to be (for example he might be taking Leadership or the Thaumaturgist PrC to get himself a healer or something) and I make it based on that suggestion, but the details are of course up to me.
