Will D&D be assassinated, bye the Power Hungary people of D&D?

Me and my friend were talking about D&D and how out of control it is getting. Can this be i was thinking back when we started it was just us 3 playing a game that was made to role-play, we had fun. But more people joined us, now we try to make the most powerful char in the game not really thinking about his story line or any thing. i think the Base of D&D gets destroyed as you play longer and its not so much who is having, but who dose the most damage.

Dose any one else have this problem in there games? if so what do you do to keep things Role-playing?

Stop worrying if other people enjoy being damage beasts. That's how they can have fun, it shouldn't necessarily impede on your own fun. If it's a matter of having "too much combat" in the game as a result, then play with a different group that has similiar expectations.

If it's yourself whose focusing/fixating on being a damage beast, just relax a bit. Choose a character that's fun to play without necessarily being a damage beast (nothing wrong with that, but in terms of getting frustrated because too many people are playing damage beasts, it's probably a good idea :P).
 


In my experience, the more we play, the more we become concentrated on good roleplaying before min/maxing. For years now, everyone in my group puts the priority on trying an interesting new concept; if the characters comes out powerful, so much better, but it's not a requirement. Back when we were younger, we tried as hard as we could to create the next combat monster, and that was fun too. No more, though.

Secondly, I think powerful characters can ruin the fun for other pcs when they try to hog the focus, but it's pretty easy for a good dm to spread it around. So Bob's fighter can unload 140 hp of damage per round; that doesn't help when the goal is to talk the evil baron into joining forces with your liege lord against the greater enemy of the balor general and his Abyssal armies (that your party can't hope to fight alone).

Welcome to the boards.

Through the years I have found that I want characters much more for their background and personality than for their combat prowess. Of course, I can also mesh those together pretty effectively if I want.

It's a game that everyone plays for slightly different reasons. So long as you enjoy your current style of play, everything is good.

I would like to point out one thing that many people assume incorrectly. D&D was not originally created as a game of "roleplay". It grew from an add on for a table top miniature wargame. The concept of "roleplay" came along long after it's inception. Also the majority of the book is still geared towards combat, so even it's most recent incarnation only a small portion is geared towards "roleplay".

That being said I don't think the fact that many people are mostly into the "power" combat game is going to do harm to the game as a whole. I think it will out last most of us.
