The awful truth about "The Ring"

I was watching The Ring last night on DVD, and I turned to my girlfriend and said, "This movie would make me throw away my VCR in abject terror, if it weren't attached to the DVD player."

Then she said, completely off-hand, "It's probably supposed to make you feel that way. The film's probably just a big plot by DVD manufacturers to get you to convert to DVD."

Then I thought about it. "Ringu" was a Japanese film. Most of your major DVD manufacturers are Japanese. Anyone else see the connection here? Who would stand to gain from making you afraid of VCRs?

There are pointedly NO DVDs, discs or players, shown in the film. No one's getting killed by shiny metal plates, just bulky old obsolete tapes and VCRs Sony would probably love to phase out in favor of more expensive DVD set-top recorders.

Wheels within wheels, my friends.

Well, I'll offer an opposite viewpoint.

After watching "I Come In Peace" , I've been afraid of cd singles and dvds because of their lethal potential if hurled through the air at a proper velocity.

Obviously "The Ring" was made to counter "I Come In Peace". A movie which was obviously trying to install the same subliminal fear to stem the tide of the upcoming popularity of the disc format.

I hear you brother. I hear you.

Take a look at the history of science fiction.

The written and radio "War of the Worlds" presented the aliens as an enemy of great power, during the 50's there was a split view with the dangers of 'pod people' from space in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" balanced by the awesome power of the "Day the Earth Stood Still" where the alien was ultimately benign but still, not the humanoid we first took it too be.

Then there are the shows like "E.T., THE Extraterrestrial" and "Encounters of the Third Kind" - aliens as friendly, even harmless beings with beneficial powers. Then there was a return of the evil, powerful aliens with "Alien" and "Predator", recently offset by the re-release of "E.T." and the appearance of an Elvis-loving engine of destruction in "Lilo and Stitch"!

Consider how the current volkswagen car is using 'pod people' as its humorous catchphrase and it has a shape reminiscent of the typical shape of a UFO - curved edge and a bulbous center portion. You think that's an accident?

...or, I might be wrong. :p
