The Beast Within Re-recruitment [Dark*Matter D20 Modern]

Heres a possible idea:

A foward scout for the US Military. While he was scouting a possible threat in Africa, he witnessed the militants he was tracking perfom rituals that actualy worked, and called forth some sort of creature. High tailing it back to basecamp, he relised that the story would be scoffed at by his superiours. He left the army, and the institue picked him up for his skills. He later learned that the unit sent to destroy the militants was slaughtered in myseterious circumstances. Well, mysterious to everyone but him and the Institute.

I was thinking Dedicated 1/ Fast 2. If this idea works, could I take the track feat as a military bonus? Since thats what his job was.

Verbatim: Sure, that's not a problem. I'm focusing more on having reliable players and interesting characters than all my players knowing the rules inside out. Go ahead and write up your character concept, and I'll hold a slot in the game for you. BTW, even if you don't yet own the book, you can find the majority of the D20 Modern rules in the Modern System Reference Document (MSRD). You can find it here: http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=msrd

E-Solution: Sounds like a workable character concept. Feel free to replace your bonus feat from the Military Occupation with Track if you want.

One thing I should stress for everyone at this point is that the tone of the game I'm planning is primarily investigative. There's going to be less combat than in a "standard" D20 Modern game, but I'll be handing out role-playing XP to compensate for the lack of combat gained XP. This isn't to say that characters with some combat capability are going to be useless by any means, but it's worth making your character useful outside of a fight.

Gotcha on the combat part. Just a quick question, since im not overly familar with Dark Matter. Does Hoffman employ actual wizard/acolytes/whatever? Are they in the setting?

If you've still got a spot open, I'd like to sign up as well.

(Just so's you know, all's I know about Dark Matter is what I've been able to glean from the theme of the story so far, and this would be my first time playing Modern.)

J,

Tried that link a couple of different ways, but it keeps telling me no dice. Am I doing something wrong with it?

Also, here is my rough concept as it stands:

Sheriff Caleb Finn's world shattered the night he lost his wife and daughter to a a crazed killer that had escaped from an upstate psycho ward. The killer was obsessed with the vampire legends, going as far as to wear a fake set when he located his victims.

Destroyed emotionally, the small town sheriff resigned, and had every intention of killing himself in the small hunting cabin he had. He was surprised to see an unmarked sedan already there. Entering warily, he saw three men in business suits sitting around his table, but as one, they stood when he entered.

What happened next, Caleb thought only happened in movies, as they explained to him that the killer was not a "pretend" vampire, but a real one. Shocked and stunned with disbelief, Caleb stared blankly at the floor for what seemed an eternity. Finally looking back up at them, Caleb asked why they had told him this, if it was supposed to be a secret.

Reaching inside his coat pocket, one of the men pulled out a simple business card with "Hoffman Institute" emblazened on the front and an address on the back.

"If you want to know more, they have your answers."

Three years later, Caleb is still looking for leads on the monster who shattered his life, but he knows that sooner or later a break will come his way. Then, with or without Hoffman's backing, the former hunter will become the prey.

Finally managed to skirt around the pages until I located the SRD for Modern. I think what I am trying to go for with Caleb is a Tough/Dedicated mixture.

What do you guys think?

Well, I've come up with a character concept: A straight-talkin' farmboy who sounds and looks like a hick, but can fix anything with parts (even electronic ones). And use it pretty well, too. (In game terms: smart hero, rural occupation.) Goes by Mick Bazly, a much shorter version of his real name, which is long and Ukrainian. (I chose Ukrainian because it reminds me of home. No, not Ukraine. Alberta.)

I take it characters need to have some sort of previous encounter with the supernatural? Before I work up a big long story, I'd like to know if there's room. I'd love to play the character, if you'll have him.

E-Solution: The Mage, Telepath and Battlemind advanced classes are all available, as is the Acolyte. It's worth noting that Acolyte are very, very rare, and the Institute is inclined to distrust them (as Acolytes may have priorities that conflict with the Institute's own goals).

Verbatim: Tough/Dedicated sounds like a good mix for your character. Sheriff Finn sounds like just the sort of person the Institute likes to hire.

Not sure why my link didn't work for you. Do you have any problems with JavaScript, as the WotC site makes fairly heavy use of it.

flyingricepaddy: Here's a list of who's expressed interest so far: d'Anconia (maybe, we've not heard from him for some time), Paxus Asclepius (already in the game), E-Solution, Verbatim and flyingricepaddy. That's five people. I've already got three, so I'm reluctant to take more than three or four more players into the game. Since d'Anconia hasn't replied for close to a week, I'm going to let flyingricepaddy take the remaining slot. Basically, that's an immensely long-winded way of saying your in.

Previous encounters with the supernatural aren't a must, but your character has to belive such things are real. The Institute doesn't object to hiring talented people with no field experience, but they're not keen on sceptics.

Not knowing much about the Dark*Matter setting doesn't really matter, as your characters are likely to be fairly ignorant of much of what's going on in the world anyway (at least at first...).

J...

Thanks for the ok, and I will try to get a sheet made and post it up for everyone to look at and tell me where I messed up, as I know there will be errors aplenty on it..:)

All,

Please forgive the many errs I'm sure are on the sheet, but this is the first modern char I've ever tried to draft up.

I'm not sure if the stats and skills match up to the concept I have for Caleb, but I'm sure you guys can point me in the right direction on that one also..:)
