The book you were all excited to get... and now gathering dust...

ForceUser: Monsternomicon? Really? Huh.

That's gotta be one of the best values I ever got out of a RPG book.

For me the useless ones have been: Wheel of Time (but a gift, so that's okay), Path of the Sword (I really thought it was going to be super-helpful. But no), and... aw, heck I dunno.

I got lots of use out of D&DG and don't use any of the pantheons, so clearly I'm a dangerous nutbag. Don't listen to me.

None. I never buy a book unless I know for sure that I'm going to use it and have a place for it in my campaign world. And I make sure I do my research before buying.

If we're talking about "haven't got around to reading yet", then it's more than half my collection... :/

Star Wars d20. Let's face it: I love D&D too much. I've played 4 sessions of SW d20, 3 years of SW d6, but D&D consumes all my attention now.

Of the D&D line, there are several I didn't have high hopes for, so I'm not that disappointed that they gather dust. (Savage Species is an example of this).

Epic Level Handbook, mainly because I don't run campaigns at those levels! ;)

Of d20-products, most likely the Maze series by Rob Kuntz. Extremely disappointing execution, and something that should have been originally published in 1980 when we didn't know anything about Greyhawk, as it too diverges from any established conventions of the setting.

Cheers!

Books that collected dust for me were Spycraft (so I gave it to PC), d20 modern (so I gave it to Clay), Slaine (but it's to good to give away), Oathbound (same as Slaine), Mutants and Masterminds (darn good books but I gave them all to people who would get use out of them), Star Wars and Wheel of Time (in the process of trying top give them away), and there has been more then a few other books I have but don't use. However, as I tend to give things away I can't recall them. :D

Well my dread was there were more people screaming about the SLCS/Scarred Lands stuff...but so far only two.

For me just two: Liber Beasterius and Secret College of Necromancy.

That first staple bound setting book for Scarred Lands. One look at the map and some of the details and I realized it wasn't for me. Before that I was more hyped on it than Nightfall is now - and quite vocal about such in the online and offline places I wasted time.

d20 Modern - took a look at how so many 'combat manuevers' were feats, and how unarmed combat worked, then noticed my Shadowrun collection and realized that I already had a very good solution to the genre - so what was the point of buying a second one that didn't really work for me?

There are others as well...

Several of the Mongoose Quintessential books, and Occult Lore from Penumbra. Almost every module I bought... and so on.

Some like Occult Lore looked interesting, but didn't pan out to my needs. Some I just wonder why I bought them...

Of course, the impulse buy had really done me right on occaision. The two things I run at the moment where both impulse buys: Kalamar and Mutants and Masterminds. Getting back into DnD with 3E was itself largely an impulse buy. I bought Wheel of Time on impulse and while I didn't use it, it led me to the novels and I read the entire series save for the last book (yet).

All of those where things I had negative opinions on but bought anyway just to shut up an inner voice.

So I'm willing to take the bad in order to reach the good.
