The book you were all excited to get... and now gathering dust...

Right now, it's my Star Wars books due to a lack of interest in my players. I may do this when the group's desire to play Spycraft ends because the only big changes will be the Force Point and Vehicle/Space Combat rules.

I assumed this was for d20 stuff, but some people included others, so I'd say a boolean, all non d20 stuff AND stuff that isn't DnD related. For example, my 1E and 2E DMG's are out and even get flipped through occasionally, but Champions, Paranoia, anything else is collecting dust.

For 3E, Psionic Players Handbook is not collecting dust, but that's because I move it around and use it as a hard writing surface. I've used it once since buying it.

Hmmm, there are plenty of books I own that I've never used, but I don't consider them to be a disappointment. My list of major disappointments:

CoC d20, I have two copies, and have been trying to get rid of one for months now. (

D20 Modern, it takes an insane amount of multiclassing to do what I want to do.

I've purchased several books that I've never used, but that doesn't mean I won't at some point in time.

Probably Dragonstar is the one that has collected the most dust. Probably still has the *creak* to the spine. Glad I didn't bother to pick up the DM's guide for it.

FRCS has seen very little use as well, but I suppose there isn't anything stopping me from running a Realms campaign somewhere in the future. Plus it's an amazingly beautiful book, and I have used a few feats and spells from it.

For me, Engel has to be the seriously most disappointing purchase I've ever made. That and the PDF of Anger of Angels. I'm really interested in the ideas behind the books, but Engel looks dreadfully boring (and woefully incomplete) and Anger of Angels looks nice and sometimes interesting, but I can't see myself using it. Overall, I'm really happy with all the d20/OGL/third party stuff I've bought. These are the two exceptions (well, and NeMoren's Vault, which I love, but won't get to run).

For Wizards stuff, I've not used my d20 Modern stuff yet (only 3 weeks having it, so that's fine). I haven't used Call of Cthulhu since August 2002. For D&D books, I've only used Tome & Blood out of all the splat books, but I've got players online who're using them, so no beef. :)

So maybe this thread should really be split into two threads:

1) what books do you have that gather dust due to lack of interest (i.e. no players) but still has a soft spot in your heart?

2) what books do you have that gather dust just because it was so frikkin' god-awful?

As with others, there are so, so many, but the two most prominent ones that fit this category are:

Deities & Demigods
Epic Level Handbook

I was *really* looking forward to the ELH, but now, well, it's just kinda sitting there.

1. Books of Eldritch Might [Malhavoc]: I love these books so much that I bought both the PDF and print version.

My players took one look and said, "feh".

I went to far as to remove the PHB Bard from my campaign and replace it with the BOEM Bard. Only one player ever touched it , and even then only for two levels.

They've remained untouched ever since. Very dissapointed, since I still really love the books.

2. Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. I was so excitied to get this, and again my players wanted no part in it.

Nobody wanted to "spend a year in a single dungeon" (which isn't an accurate assessment of the module anyway).
