The Closed Eye (DM: Halford, Judge: garyh)

OOC: I am back. I like your plan Kenhood, its safe and well thought of. Lets do it if DM approves, otherwise we have Tanders plan as backup. The thing is, that we probably will have to make some skill check to build that thing. Who would be the best candidate for such a task?

OOC: Thanks.

It shouldn't be much of a skill check, if any. To bind the boards in place, you don't need to know anything more than how to make an overhand knot.

Our characters come from a (relative to our own) primitive society, so their skill-sets will be aimed more towards do-it-yourself.

Furthermore, any character with the Thievery skill should have some mechanical aptitude (due to disarm trap), and characters with the Nature skill should be able to do it, because they can construct shelter in the wilderness--and that assumes even poorer resources choices than our characters have in this house.

Round 3

Palindrome flips the trap door shut, ending the danger for now.

End combat, for now. The fort construction will take perhaps an hour; that means you can take multiple short rests if you like. This means that Atreus' temp HP go away now. Also, everyone reaches a milestone and gains an AP, among other possible benefits I may have forgotten.

Using a hatchet from the woodpile outside, as well as various cutting tools from the kitchen, Palindrome leads the construction of a crude fort from the materials at hand. The resulting contraption is heavy and fairly sturdy, if perhaps not as large as could have been hoped; only two people will fit inside comfortably, or three if they squeeze.

Eventually, the preparations are complete, and the party gather in front of the trap door. (Let me know everyone's position, and who's in the fort.)

[sblock=status]
This needs updating based on what you do in the short rests, obviously.

spears at G1, undamaged
Crossbow 1, 27 damage, "bloodied?"
Crossbow 2, undamaged

Palindrome 27/27, one failed death save
Woe 28/40
Tander 29/29
Atreus 20/24

Resources used:
* Tander: surge x5
* Atreus: Surge x4, healing potion
* Palindrome: Surge x6, healing potion
* Woe: Surge x6

[sblock=fort mechanics]
We'll run this like one of the vehicles from AV, mostly modeled on a wagon.

The Fort (medium vehicle)
HP: 100
Space: 2 squares by 1 square
AC 3; Fort 10, Reflex 3
Speed: 3 less than the slowest creature carrying it, or 4 less if only one creature is carrying it. Always at least one square.
Creature-Drawn: The Fort is carried by one or more of the creatures inside it. Carrying the fort takes both hands for each carrying creature. Moving the fort takes a move action from each creature inside it, and can only be moved during the driver's turn. That is if Woe and Tander are inside the fort, and Woe uses a move action to move it on his turn, then on Tander's turn, Tander is considered to have already used his move action for that round. If Tander declines to use his move action, he does not remain inside the fort. If the driver uses two move actions to move the fort twice, each creature inside must use two move actions to remain inside.
Driver: Whoever's in the front of the Fort. The driver must be carrying the fort, using both hands, or it cannot move.
Load: Two medium creatures, or three medium creatures if they are squeezing (PHB p.292).
Superior Cover: Creatures in the Fort have superior cover against foes the the front, top, or one side of the Fort, and have an additional +2 bonus to AC and reflex.

That work for you guys?
[/sblock]

After administering further aid to Woe, Tander does his best to aid in the construction of the 'fort', eager to remain busy.

OOC: Extra healing for Woe - 6hp (so his next surge usage will bring him to full). I'm assuming everyone but Woe goes in the fort.

Out of Character...

It's a vehicle! :D

How about we squeeze Tander, Atreus, and Palindrome into the fort?
  • Tander and Palindrome can make ranged attacks without spinning around a weapon.
  • Atreus and Palindrome can make Thievery checks.
  • Tander and Atreus have high Perception scores.

Woe is the most heavily armored, so we could have him walk directly behind the fort. He would get some cover from the fort. And when we park under the crossbows, he could attack with his spear. While we move, he could attack with his javelins. (Can he move at the same time as the fort?)

Woe will take the role we had planned for Atreus at the start (i.e. opening the trap door and pushing the barrel).

With Tander, the fort has a move of 2 squares. Our first move can get us to (E, 1).

Let's do it!

--

Round 1...
Woe (shield and javelin) opens the door and tumps the barrel down the stairs with his javelin.

The fort moves to (E, 1). From inside the guys attack the eerily bleeding crossbow.

Initially, Woe is unsure whether it’s worth going to such lengths with the idea - he figures a few more potshots behind a quick makeshift barricade could handle the turrets and save them some time.

Once they get started he toils away enthusiastically, however, whistling the tune to an unsavory Dwarven worker’s song that parallels women and hard labor – it’s called “Hammering Away”.

“It lives, fellas! It lives!” he laughs when the fort stands completed.

Once the team is ready at the trapdoor, Woe opens it and tilts the barrel down to cause a distraction, then takes up position at the rear.

“All aboard! Full speed ahead!”

Woe keeps as close behind the fort as possible once they descend down the staircase once again, javelin and shield in hand. As soon as the two turrets come into view he flings away at the damaged crossbow, then crouches back in cover behind their construction.

[sblock=Back in Biz]Hey guys, I'm back. Thumbs-up to all the cool planning (though a little over-elaborate ;))!

Woe hits AC 26 and deals 8 damage with his javelin. This may technically take place in round 2, though, since Woe first opens the door and causes the distraction, then moves into position.

By the way, I believe Pal’s failed death save went away after we rested.

OOC: Over-elaborate is half the fun!

During the entire construction period, Palindrome says not a word, working at a fevered pace with his tongue stuck halfway out of his mouth.

Inside the fort, he chuckles in anticipation.

[sblock=Actions]MOVE: Fort to (E,1).
STANDARD: Magic Missile at bloodied crossbow. (1d20+5=6, 2d4+4=9) -- See? There it goes again. High results, then a '1'.
MINOR: Perception check. (1d20+4=12)

[sblock=AFK]Now that Dunamin and Atriden are back, looks like I'm gonna be a-leavin' for a couple or three days.[/sblock]

OOC: Palindrome keeps the hatchet from the wood-pile. Probably going to buy a hammer and bag of nails, too.

Atreus is not entirely sure if this is going to work in the start but admits to himself as the construction nears its completion, that this fort might actually work.
" Minu ga hana " he says to the others in a tongue they do not know and claps their creation. [sblock=Tseugo]Meaning: Not what I expected. / Reality can't compete with imagination - Japanese Proverb [/sblock]
He goes inside the fort. He joins Palindrome in the search for the control panel. Not sure if he finds the control panel he takes the opportunity to aim with his trusty sling at the damaged crossbow; a backup plan if the panel does not show itself.
[sblock=Actions]
Move Action: Moves into the fort and takes forth his sling
Minor Action: Searches for the control panel
Standard Action: If he finds the control panel, he will deactivate the traps ( I am not sure if ya need a Thievery check for it, but here it goes: Thievery check). Otherwise he uses Sly Flourish against the damaged crossbow and If act before the traps/crossbows I get combat advantage and will gain sneak attack since its a new encounter - First Strike Rogue feature.

Tander is momentarily distracted by the absurdity of what he is about to do. He cautiously enters the fort, and when it starts to move, he does his best to aid in the destruction of the crossbows while searching for traps.

OOC:

Move - move with the fort.
Standard - Lance of Faith vs bloodied crossbow hits ref 15 for 7 damage. If hit, Palindrome's next attack against same target gets +2 bonus to hit.
Minor - perception 24 to look for control panel, trap stuff etc

ooc: No time to process all that just now. A couple of points, though. First, don't forget that when you're squeezing, you take -5 to attack rolls, grant CA, and move at half speed (so the fort's speed becomes 1). Also, who's driving it? The driver needs both hands on the fort, i.e. not making attacks.
