I heard the 4E would hit store shelves on Dec. 22, 2012.

Actually, 4E has been out for a while now, but you cannot even see the book unless you have your Captain Action Magic Goggles (TM), and even if you could see it, you need the special secret decoder ring from Acme (a subsidiary of the Fly-By-Night Corporation) in order to read it.

I've noticed the "anonymous sources" that some people claim to have (at least those who seem to be serious) have been relatively stable on when it will be. For instance, they started out saying that it's merely planned. Then they said it's in development. Then playtesting. Most recently they've actually started to say it's hit the printers.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the anonymous sources to tell us that it's out, then to tell us it's broken, then to wonder when the errata will be updated, then to cry/cheer about a new 4.5E. Maybe by then Wizards will actually put out a press release.

Seriously, I have enough 3.5 material to go for years, at least 4-5, if not longer. If 4E comes out before then, that's nice, but whatever.
