"Take it easy everyone, and try not to make any noise."

Banion will take 10 on his Hide and Move Silently Checks, for a result of 22 and 20 respectively. The hide result, of course, will only apply once we hit some cover.

Edit: Banion places a slingstone into one of his slings, and keeps it at the ready.

Who knows what it could be Gur, by all means follow them, however Hastur and I will accompany you.

ooc: Have to ask -- Did you name your familiar that just to make old schoolers like me twitch? Somewhere in the back of my mind, every time you say it I hear the DM making a dice roll and chuckling evilly. :D

OOC: LOL I have begun reading some of Lovecraft's stuff, after hearing my friends mention the name HASTUR before, I knew that it would be perfect to name my beloved familar HASTUR weasel of doom, so yes there is definately shudder factor behind my HASTUR and his name. I also was pleasantly amused to see Knight refer to me earlier as Azatoth which I mutated to my character's name. Did I forget to mention my character's fascination with demons and devils?

I am going to take 10 (if I can) as well on a hide and move silently check both of which are a measely 11 (10 + 1= 11)

(I don't think it's normally possible to take 10 on hide/move silently, unless the check is unopposed or something odd like that. I've been wrong before though.)'

Edit:

Gur adds, "You know, I'm just checking things out here. It's probably not related to our job, and I don't want to detract any time from our paid time, if you know what I mean."

Banion moves slowly away from Azaroth, noting that the big man might give him away. Hopefully, he's far enough away that someone noticing Azaroth won't necessarilly notice Banion, too.

Taking 10: When your character is not being threatened or distracted, you may choose to take 10. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, calculate your result as if you had rolled a 10. For many routine tasks, taking 10 makes them automatically successful. Distractions or threats (such as combat) make it impossible for a character to take 10. In most cases, taking 10 is purely a safety measure —you know (or expect) that an average roll will succeed but fear that a poor roll might fail, so you elect to settle for the average roll (a 10). Taking 10 is especially useful in situations where a particularly high roll wouldn’t help.

I don't see what would prevent it, unless combat was allready underway. Taking 20 wouldn't work, but taking 10 ought to be fine. People do this all the time in my tabletop games, and it seems to me its an especially good idea if there's more than one person in your stealth team.

OOC: Your probably right, though I'm not exactly sure. I don't think it makes sense with opposed skill checks.

Edit: My younger brother just came up with a good example of the weirdness. If the skill that sets the DC (hide) is 11 greater than the skill that hits the DC (spot), the spotter has an 11.25% chance of success. If the person that sets the DC (hider) takes 10, the spotter has a 0% chance of success.

If the skill that hits the DC (spot) is 10 greater than the skill that hits the DC (hide), the spotter has an 88.75% chance of success. If the person that hits the DC (spotter) takes 10, the spotter has a 100% chance of success.

"I think a few hours won't hurt us gur, out of a trip of 14 days! Still, if you guys are going to sneek up on these ogres, I should probably stay behind. Come back if you need me, and if I hear anything, I'll come a running."

OOC: There is also a penalty for rolling badly for hide checks(people can spot you easier!). I'm almost positive you cannot take 10. At least in my tabletop games you can't =)

EDIT: nevermind! I was thinking of take 20! Maybe sam should come along =)

"Right, if we get mauled by ogres, I'll be sure to point them in your direction. Actually, I spotted wild dog tracks. Could be wolves, maybe, if I'm off my game. I just wanted to be certain to make sure things were right around here."

Gur considers again...

"Your plenty welcome to come if you want. I just don't want to be a pain in the arse, any more than usual that is."

ooc: Isn't that example the same as the benefit described in the taking 10 quote above? Avoiding the possibility of a low roll is exactly why one does take 10 in the first place. Note that Use Magic Device specifically disallows taking 10, while Hide and Move Silently do not. (I agree you can't take 20.)

"Well, why did you say we were going after Ogres, then? If you want me along, I'll come. I don't want to cramp your style"

OOC: I'm going to be traveling for most of the day. Sam will do whatever Gur tells him to if Gur wants him to come along, and will do whatever the majority of the party does if Gur does not want him to come along.
