The Stranger (Part 2) - In English
Lamar Faz flashed a fake smile at the waitress and slipped a couple of coins in her hand. He exited the Korona as fast as he could and scanned the avenue, trying to see his friends. It was the end of the working day for the people of Cumulus and the streets were a lot more crowded than a few hours before. Faz quickly spotted Buenaventura and Lilwenn but noticed they seemed to have lost their quarry. Faz climbed on a window sill and noticed a shifty looking guy who was speeding away, trying to go unnoticed. It was their man, walking towards the 3rd quadrant, the area where Lilwenn had disembarked and where the « Ur Portal » stood. Faz signalled to his friends and discretely ambled closer to Buenaventura :
- Follow me this way, he said. By the way, Lieutenant, how do you know it’s a symbiot ?
- Remember Ryan ? This guy had the same kind of skin palpitations Ryan had just before he…
The sentence hung in the air, unfinished. But Faz knew what it was about. At the time the story had spread like wildfire in Darmak Station and the Lieutenant’s reputation had gone up a notch.
- Sh*t ! Faz exclaimed to himself, moving away from the ex-officer.
The Red Devils were keeping an eye on their prey while trying to appear casual. After a few minutes of pursuit, Faz saw the strange man suddenly stop and quickly duck in a side street. Buenaventura and Lilwenn hadn’t noticed and were confused as to where the guy had gone. Faz quickly took the lead and gestured to the others for them to follow. Lilwenn moved towards him and whispered :
- D’you think he’s spotted us ?
- It’s a possibility… I guess it depends whether he noticed us in the bar or not...
When they reached the side street, though, the three veterans immediately understood that it wasn’t them the man had been running away from : fifty yards further down on the avenue, a small group of inquisitors, flameguns in hand, were slowly coming their way, the crowd parting in front of them. Apparently, they hadn’t spotted the strange man yet.
The three friends entered the side street, trying to look inconspicuous so they wouldn’t attract the attention of the black-clad priests. Their quarry had picked up some advance and kept edging towards smaller and quieter streets. Buenaventura, Lilwenn and Lamar spread out again, since it was becoming increasingly easier for the strange man to notice them dogging him.
They turned into an alleyway and were abruptly stopped by a huge metal gate similar to the one Lilwenn had seen earlier in the afternoon. A rusty yellow sign screwed to the gate indicated :
SAFETY ZONE
NO TRESPASSER ALLOWED
A skull surmounted the text. Faz wondered if that wasn’t a bad sign of what was to come…
- Err, shouldn’t we go warn the Inquisition ?
- Too late now, Buenaventura answered. By the time they get here, the guy’ll be long gone...
- Speaking of which, do you see him anywhere, Lilwenn interrupted.
Without any street lights in the alley, the safety zone was surrounded by shadows. It was hard to spot anything… The three veterans scanned the area for a few seconds, then Buenaventura whispered :
- Up there, on the left wall.
He was pointing to a place five yards above ground and ten yards from the gate. On the side of a decrepit building, the other two noticed a darker shadow slowly crawling sideways on the wall, getting away from them.
- Urkh ! Lilwenn exclaimed, still whispering. Looks like a huge spider…
- It may not be far from the truth, Buenaventura replied gravely. Well, if I still had any doubts, it’s no longer the case. Let’s move !
Faz grabbed the metal mesh of the gate and swiftly climbed to the top. Lilwenn seemed to have more trouble and Buenaventura helped her to get over the obstacle.
- Someone has stopped doing push-ups since demobilisation, he said coldly…
While his companions climbed over the gate, Faz extracted a fusion torch from his back and lit it. A cold blue light suddenly illuminated the abandoned alleyway. Here and there, blocks of maxicrete and various other debris had fallen on the ground. Bars of corroded ceramsteel jutted out of the facades, indicating that the place really had been abandoned for a long time…
Suddenly, still whispering, Buenaventura asked Lamar to light an area of the wall on which they had spotted the moving shadow. A sudden shine had called his attention.
- Look here, he told his companions, pointing to a metal bar jutting out of a block of concrete.
The end of the bar shined, as if it had been recently cut off.
- I don’t know what it means, but let’s be very careful, the Hazat said.
The three of them slowly walked up to an intersection. They halted, uncertain of which direction their quarry had taken. Buenaventura signalled to the others to check the roads front and right and he moved towards the road to the left. Since only Faz had a source of light, Lilwenn and Buenaventura’s visibility was very limited.
The ex-lieutenant was moving forward cautiously when he thought he saw something move a few yards in front of him. Instinctively, he jumped back. He heard a soft, wet sound in front of him and saw a spark on the building wall to his left. Someone was shooting at him !
He moved backwards as quick as he could, fumbling for his crossbow. A few seconds before he passed the corner that would have covered him, he heard the wet sound again and screamed in pain : an inch long piece of metal had just entered his right arm.
