The EN World Selfie Thread

I've had the strange experience over my life that people never seem to think I'm my age, off by five to ten years in one direction or the other depending on the time in my life.
I've been accused of being 16-17 until I was thirty, and of being under 21 until my beard started graying at 50...

And someone once approached me and asked if I was my own offspring... I recognized her, and said, "n., I am the guy you are reminded of...and don't apologize for it." Hugs followed, and then a 15 minute talk about our spouses and offspring. She was still hot after 5 kids... and still didn't believe she was pretty. And still had the urge to apologize for everything.

On the other hand, the same day Mr. Schulz asked for my pass, a student stayed late after 4th period, asked if I was class of 87, and then informed me her mom and I had Choir together. Said student was 17, and a senior. I felt very old after that. In the 2010s, I encountered the grandchildren of a couple classmates. How do I know? Grandparent showed up at school performance, then cornered me after. That didn't help, especially since the said I looked the same as in senior year.

I had the reverse. Being assumed by a convenience store clerk to be the father of a man in his mid-30s with thinning hair and a beard (a friend who was in the store with me). Since I'm 49 (and really look it), I suppose he could have been my son, but it still hurt.

My Mom was a music teacher at Landry in NOLA while my grandfather was a principal there. They had similar stories, but one that stood out for me was “The Day They Set The Trees On Fire”.

Really, not much to tell beyond the headline, but it should be noted that when fellow New Orleaneans find out where Mom taught, their eyes go wide and their mouths drop open.
That's awesome. I loved the story about your grandfather.

My father had a light show called the Brotherhood of Light in the late 60's/early 70's. He partied with and was on a first name basis with The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and many other big names of the day. His lightshow was one of the main lightshows at the Filmore West in San Francisco. Last year I was doing an internet search and I found this picture of him in the Smithsonian.

I happened to talk to the guy who does the gardening for us (because he's been doing it since my parents owned this house and his rates are incredibly reasonable) and it turned out both of us though I was younger than he was, and its the other way around (though there's only a three year difference between us). I fairly commonly get people who think I'm a decade younger now, but when I was in my late teens/early twenties, people routinely thought I was in my late twenties.

You're making me wish I had a picture when I singed my eyebrows off from being too close to our ancient gas heater when I was trying to clean the dust out of it earlier this year.

(Usually when I manage to damage myself its arms.)
For me, my legs are cursed. You'd think there would be more distribution of injuries. I'll be kind, however, and save you all from a selfie of my legs.
