It really was a freak thing. My GF said I saw him hit and my neighbor on the other side was also there said I heard it. We sat there and drank for an hour or two by the time we thought to call an ambulance. I was trying to stanch the blood with a washcloth and every time I took it off blood would projectile shoot. When the ambulance came it was 4 gorgeous women, I said "Tell it to me straight, am I going to make it"? they busted out laughing so I knew I was in good hands. I was so drunk by that time, "ironically" I had "THEM" in stiches. By the time I got to ECMC it was 3AM and I almost got into a fight with some other drunk. We were literally walking towards each other to fight when the nurse walked by and yelled at us to back on our gurneys. Drs sewing up my face and I'm on the phone talking to my girlfriend...he said "ah nah you're fine you can keep talking". Had to call my brother at 4:30 AM to pick me up and bum a smoke off another guy that just got out. We had walk a good NYC block to smoke because you couldn't smoke in so much distance around the hospital. Think that was April 2015, nice night, we were taking advantage of a warm evening getting drunk. Dr did a great job, you cant even see the scars. And as an added bonus I got my deviated septum fixed.That does not sound fun at all...those malcontent gophers.

I jumped on this thread because I was looking through my folder of pics (and never found what I was looking for - no U2 pun intended) and I kept coming across a bunch of funny moments caught in time. I could rattle off a story on each one.
I wanted to post a very retro photo. This is my paternal grandfather and I, getting ready to attend a group “sweet 16”/society presentation event one of my cousins was in. I had to be dressed formally because I was taking her father’s place for the Father/Daughter dance*; he’s in a tux because of him being him.

In some ways, you’re not far off. He had an ever present aura of fear & respect.
He was a smart, driven man, and no-nonsense. He channeled that into becoming an educator. He taught HS & college courses, and was even a principal- actually, the first black man to be a principal of a white school in NOLA.
There’s all kinds of professionals who have told me stories of how he disciplined them into getting their act together. Walking around NOLA with him was almost a political act as you’d be seen with him as he waved back to those who knew him. Someone made Rev. Jesse Jackson cross the street to meet him. His presence occasionally caused Mardi Gras parades to pause.
His protégés cleaned up schools the likes of which they made action films about.
TBH, I’m surprised they haven’t named a school or building after him yet.

Cool story. Was that the Morgan Freeman movie "Lean on Me"? I saw it in the theaters when it came out.

Here's from a few weeks ago when I was in Greece (not a usual occurrence, it took 27 hours to get there!)
No movie was made explicitly about him or his protégés, but they had many stories that could have been the inspiration or one of the inspirations behind a movie.
For instance, there was a school here in D/FW called Carter High. In the 1980s-90s, it was so crime ridden that it seemed like there was a Carter student arrested every month.
Then, one of my grandfather’s former assistant principals became the new principal for CH. After a lot of hard work, he turned the school around, and it started making news for the right reasons- renovations, improved student outcomes, and a precipitous decline in the student body arrest rate. When my grandfather visited us, he (not us) got invited down for a grand tour.
At this point, I can’t remember the last time a Carter student made a bad headline .
