[The End of the World of Darkness] What's White Wolf got up its sleeve?

God, I've been seeing this one coming from YEARS out. I mean, they've been dropping hints left and right. Just curious to see what they are going to do with the perfect metis werewolf born in Rage Across the Heavens, when the Red Star appears, which is supposed to be a sign to both the Garou AND the vampires that the end is nigh. Also the Accordance War in Changeling and the coming of the Fomorians.
To this day, I'm still trying to figure out the direct correlation between the end of Wraith and the beginning of Hunter. I mean, I can see why after Stygia falls that you'd see more wraiths and Risen in the skinlands, but I fail to see how that would grant the Hunters their powers.
Now, I'm with some other people when I say I want to at the very least see a unified game system for playing PCs of all types (Vampire, Wraith, Changeling, Mage, Mummy, etc.). It'd be awesome if they made it dual-stat with d20, but since White Wolf's fanbase will probably whine about that more than alot of the L5R rpg fanbase, it probably won't happen. So long as they actually have a workable combat system, I'll be happy. Also tired of WW diehards that say WoD isn't about combat, when they clearly have never played Werewolf...

Beginning, Middle and End?

They say every story needs an ending, and this is simply the ending of the story that was World of Darkness.

I am looking forward to it, I am sure they will have at least a page or 2 on "alternate endings" where gehenna didnt happen and the world went on, there wont be anything published for that, but do I really need there to be? Not really, I got enough crap, and I barely own ANY WoD stuff.

Me and my player group are considering using the gehenna for a truly epic campaign.

Imagine playing vamps embraced during the fall of rome period of history, then playing six months in each time period, Roman times, Dark Ages, Victorian, Industrial Revolution, Modern Nights, and then Finally Gehenna. It would need to be well planned, with say 6 months of once a week games planned for each time period, adding up to 3.5 years.

Of course a game like this would require players that would 1. Be willing to put in the time commitment 2. Be willing to deal with that at the end of the game, your characters would almost certainly die.

Hopefully in well done appropriate ways, but still you couldnt win this one, its the end of the world, noone wins.

I think a game like this would be extremely awesome.

Thanx

So the final hardcover only covers Demon: The Fallen, Hunter: The Reckoning, Mummy: The Resurrection, Kindred of the East and Changeling: The Dreaming? Geez... Street Fighter gets no love. ;)

It may come as a suprise to some people in this thread, but for everyone here who speaks ill of the World of Darkness line (most having never played one of the games)...there is someone out there who speaks ill of the D&D line, citing it as not being a "real" roleplaying game. I'm not one of those people, I think both of them are fine roleplaying games with their place in the market.

Just because you do not care for the WoD setting, the premise or the rules should not be a reason for you to dismiss it as being a bad game. To do so, you are basically telling your fellow gamers that their opinion is invalid.

Please limit your comments to something at least vaguely polite and constructive...such as, "I never cared for the World of Darkness games." Then leave it at that. Comments like "People still play this?" are not helping anyone.

The truth is that for years I personally considered WoD to be superior to 1st and 2nd edition D&D for actual roleplaying. With the introduction of a skill system and more open minded rules 3rd ed. D&D reclaimed a good bit of it's own as a roleplaying game.

However, I still think the WoD has an edge in terms of pure roleplaying, character development (in terms of personality and such) and game maturity. By maturity I don't mean distasteful or adult themes...I mean advanced thought and action.

I will miss the World of Darkness...I feel like I am losing an old friend in some ways.

And yet, as others here have stated, I'm looking forward to what will come from White Wolf Studios next.

Actualy, now that I've had time to think this over, I have gone from "Blech" to "NOOOOOO!!!!".

I *like* the WoD darnit! I don't want it to end!

Just like every one of us, the setting was born to die. The writing was on the wall, scribed with the same ink that wrote the playtest documents.

I am kinda glad they will give the setting an ending, UNLIKE so many game-settings and TV shows that go on and on until they fade to obscurity.

And Even when the setting officially ends, you can play the official game as a period peice [1990's] to say nothing of the home games where the storyteller decides to use thier vision of the WOD.

Then again, my favorite horror game has this unpleasant habit of sometimes causing the end of the game world when an adventure goes wrong. And Call of Cthulhu been round since the 80's.

It would be nice to see the WW system unified or even become its own open gaming system.

Please don't get me wrong, i like the WW system, but they made a promise, and now they are making good on it.

And now you all see why WW would have had my liver on a platter if I'd spilled this earlier on in the thread. :)

For those who care, BTW, I had the privilege (not to mention the gut-wrenching, mind-numbing terror) of writing the Gehenna novel. My first published novel, as a matter of fact. (I've written others, but they haven't yet found a publisher, and most of those are fantasy.) I look forward to people's reactions with a mixture of anticipation and mortal dread. ;)

I noticed, congratulations! After looking at something else at Gaming Report I decided to check if they had anything on WW?s big announcement and while looking through the list of products I saw your name after the novel and thought cool!

alright, not having played in a rather long time, how did they end Wraith?

RX

The Sixth Great Maelstrom occured, wiping out everything and flinging some of the dead back to earth. Charon reappeared and then ascended. It was in "Ends of an Empire" or something close to that. Good book from what I hear.

Gutsy of them. I don't care how good a writer you are, if I was in charge I would not use a previously unpublished writer on something of this level. That's not a put-down on you or anything, just me being amazed.
