The Fate of D20 Modern

They've mentioned updating d20 Modern to follow suit in a year or so. It's on their to-do list essentially.

Since I never really bought into d20 Modern but have always had interest in it, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.

Actually, I've been enjoying D20 Modern since its release. An overhaul using the the new engine would be a great idea and I'd fully buy into it.

I really hope we can expect to see this next year.

I agree that there are some elements of D20 modern that could use a face lift, and a smaller subset of those changes could be successfully gleened from the 4e model. However, 4e is a pure combat game. D20 modern is not, it covers every genre including mysteries, investigations, horror, survival, political, etc. The classes of modern are not 100% combat balanced, precisely because the less combat capable classes bring more to the other challenges the game presents. Not only this, but modern is intentionally more simulationist in its design, and I think to move away from that would be taking the game in the wrong direction.

They've mentioned a 4E license that will allow 4E to be used with non fantasy settings. I think that license will likely be as much as we get of a new edition of d20 Moderm. I'm fine with that... I loved the idea of d20 Modern, but didn't like how different it was from D&D. I've got a great "near future arcane apocalypse" campaign setting in my mind, but I want to be able to use from D&D resources freely without conversion.

Right now I'm planning to do it on my own. I'm currently trying to decide if I want to try to find a way to fold modern weapons into current classes, or scrap (maybe just some of) the classes and start fresh (but remained balanced with existing classes.)

You're wrong. Yes, a lot of 4e is about combat, but there are more pages in the player's handbook about role playing than there are in the entire combat chapter.
The DMG spends about 70 of it's 219 pages on combat, and that includes the sample adventure in the back. The rest of the book is about running games, the types of players, advice on table conventions, designing and running exciting non combat encounters, and how to get a good mix of combats and role playing to keep an entire table of diverse tastes interested and engaged with the entire story.
The monster manual focuses almost entirely on combat encounters, but that's what you bought it for. Cultural and role play aspects of opponents are entirely up to the setting / adventure plot; and there's still a great amount of advice about those subjects tucked into each monster's entry.

I'm not saying that a new 4th Edition-style Modern will be great, but I am really interested to see what the people that brought us 4th Edition decide to do with non fantasy gaming. I don't see how they could do anything like the d20 Modern class structure with the new engine, so I'm very curious to see how they deal with that issue and many others (automatic weapons, ranged versus melee attacks, high explosives, etc.).

While I understand that 4e is well liked most I sadly am not one of them. :D
(Sorry folks, I like multiclass types to a degree that isn't available in 4e, pathfinder is more my speed).

Having said that I HOPE they don't completely change d20 modern to 4e, not because of the mechanics, but because I LIKE the way it is..

Well, then you can have your D20 Modern the way you like (it's already out there) and I'll have mine based on the 4E ruleset. Everyone's happy :D Just like you can play Pathfinder and I'll play 4E.

Don't get me wrong, personal preference aside, I think 4e works.. I just don't think it's what you want with the way d20 Modern is. It's definitely given the fighter some teeth.

I just like multiclassing..and that is part of the fun in d20 Modern. :D

Currently playing a D20 Modern/3.5 mix, game (I DM a 4th ed D&D though).

Good fun, Wickerman meets The Devil Rides Out
my character is 1st Expert/3rd Psion--he's an ex-forensics scientist who now works as a private eye to help the British Special Branch on "odd" stuff, on the "quiet"....set in 1970's, think "The Sweeney", not "CSI" ! :p)

would love to see 4th ed Modern! :)
