It's shaping up to be a great year for DVD comedy with this and The Tick (animated) finally getting DVD releases.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Series, there were three movies made under the "Naked Gun" title that were loosely based on the TV series, however each movie was only about 1/10th as funny as an individual 30min episode from the series. In tone and style the 3rd movie was closest (more deadpan humor and less slapstick than the earlier films) to the TV series, which was played absolutely dead serious. Alas there were only 6 episodes ever produced, but they stand as classics for the ages and the bar by which I measure all other comedies.

I fondly remember these, so I'll be picking this up. And it's a great price, too, for pure genius.

The 'fake freezeframe' at the end of each episode was sheer genius...

And the special guest stars ... and the fact that it was advertised as being "in color," like the old shows that switched from b&w to color a couple decades earlier ...

Uh-oh!! I know what I'll be adding to my Christmas shopping list for my fiancee, then. On our very first date, he invited me back to his place to watch his Police Squad laserdiscs.

It was indeed funny, but not the funniest ever. That honour goes to either Fawlty Towers or Blackadder. Can't decide which! :)

You obviously haven't been watching Garth Marenghi's Darkpace! Check it out on the Sci-Fi channel, tomorrow evening sometime....

No love for Sports Night?

I only wish it had come in the wake of The West Wing.

The popularity of WW may have garnished it enough interest to last longer than a season anda half.

My thoughts on Sports Night can be summed up by a line from an episode of Family Guy when a teenager just licked a psychadelic toad:

"Wow, I finally understand Sports Night: it's a comedy that's too good to be funny!"
