The Gnew Gnome, are they just as useless and lame as the others?

My only gnome NPC (or character in general) was "Painless" a neutral evil engineer Thief (would have been an expert in 3e) who used an Arqubus-axe. He was very intimidating and when he left the party they spent most of thier time looking over thier shoulders for "that crazy gnome"

for the record, tinker gnomes were Jeff Grubb's idea.

And as a dragonlance and gnome fan, i think it was a darned good idea at that =)
The only good thing to come out of the tinker gnomes weren't even from the Dragonlance campaign setting, but from Spelljammer.

Giant Space Hamsters.

I can't just ignore the requests of my fans and really be much of a bard now can I?

On the day I was born, the midwife looked down
And she listened in wonder, at the glorious sound
She told ma right there, that I couldn't stay at home
She could tell by my sweet voice, that I was bad to the gnome
Bad to the gnome
Bad to the gnome
B-B-B-B-Bad to the gnome
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the gnome

I made a thousand folk smile, before I met you
I'll make a thousand more baby, before I am through
I'm gonna play more jokes, with putty and foam
But that's just a day in the life, when you're glad to the gnome
Glad to the gnome
G-G-G-Glad
G-G-G-Glad
G-G-G-Glad
Glad to the gnome

I make tangelfoot bags, I'll make things that go boom
I've built 20 foot robots, without any fear of doom
I wanna build an iron golem, but who needs the tome?
I'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm mad to the gnome
M-M-M-M-Mad
M-M-M-M-Mad
M-M-M-M-Mad
Mad to the gnome

I don't see a problem with the gnew gnomes or gnomes in general. IMC, gnomes are slightly smaller than halflings and more nature-oriented and less industrious, almost druidic in weaving Nature around them. Influences include the book called Gnomes (similar to Faeries, Giants and Humans, the late-70's, early 80's art books by various authors and artists) and world mythology, creating different types of gnomes and I use the Dark Creeper as a sinister gnome, the Grey Gnome, with dark agendas, although good and evil exist throughout gnomish culture, with only one other evil gnome subtype and a couple that although perceived as evil, are actually really rather rustic and wild.

Despite my love of gnomes, I think I would rather see goblins, or even orcs or kobolds take their place as a core race. I'd also like to ditch the half-elf and half-orc.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I LOVE gnomes. But if they weren't a core race, maybe people wouldn't be griping about them and maybe they could be secretive, shy, reclusive, and prone to pranks....the more mortal of the fey, like elves but without the ego.
