This sounds like a neat environment. I'd be game for throwing my hat in the ring. I think maybe a 'convinced he's going to save the world' ranger:
Titus hails from a remote community which, convinced that the absence of the gods and the growing darkness herald an apocalypse, has decided to guard itself through its children. Every child born has undergone intensive training programs instituted by the town elders to fight off the forces of darkness whenever they arrive.
The problem is--probably because of just how remote and off the beaten path their village is--there's been no one to fight except training dummies and each other, and as the children grew into their more aggressive teen years, the town's defenders became one of its biggest problems. They co-opted their parents tools for their weapons (Titus' father finds working much more difficult since he's lost his pick), tied up the local blacksmith in working their armor and fashioning other weapons that caught their fancy. They organized skirmish exercises, fake invasions, geurrilla ambushes, seiges, and in general have turned the town into a mock war zone. There is no invading force, but for all the disruption and damage the young warriors do, there might as well be.
Finally the town had enough, and demanded that its youth settle down, nice and proper like, or leave town. Most of the children did just that. Titus, disgruntled by how easily they all gave in, and still possessed of the idea that he was destined to battle invading hordes of one kind or another, stomped off in a huff, out into the world.
