The Rerisen Tower: Day 1, Hour 3, Minute 22

As Earth stows the golden-bough plank, there is some shouting and commotion outside, but it's hard to tell exactly what's going on from inside the cabin.

As members of the group look outside, it appears there is chaos on the dock.

Sergeant Rump and his guardsmen are holding back a mob armed with torches and clubs. When Rump glances back and sees heads peeking out of the crew cabin, he shouts out, "looks like someone leaked about the murders and the gold both, could you deputies... hey! The ship is moving!"

Sure enough, the ship is slowly moving away from the dock with the tide, somehow free from its moorings!

GM: Time for a skill challenge. Your initial objective is: A) get off the ships before it leaves the dock(appropriate skills DC 16), individual success gets you off the ship or B) work as a group to somehow stop the ship from being swept away with the tide(appropriate skills DC 18), 4 successes needed before 3 failures, C) Stay on the ship and try to get it under control and sail it back to the dock(appropriate skills DC 16), 8 successes needed before 3 failures.

Everyone makes 1 assist or skill check each round. DCs will likely get harder as rounds go on however as the ship is swept further out to sea, so too many assist may make things worse rather than better...

As usual, 4e's skills are somewhat limited. Use whatever skill seems the most appropriate for what you're trying to do.

This will also serve as a roll-call to see who is still here. The first round of the skill challenge will end 2 days or so after half of the group have posted or when the entire group posts, whichever comes first. Anyone who doesn't post before that time falls into the sea and disappears from the adventure.

Devinihm, wilden druid

"The tide and wind are at odds!" Devinihm calls. "If we angle the ship or the sails, we will not move!" He yanks at the sail ropes in an effort to encourage the ship to angle appropriately...

OOC: Edit: Both rolls are successes vs. the DC, I think. Descriptively I'd say he's using Nature most (to figure out the proper angle to make the wind and tide work against one another) if it matters.

"Well would you look at that!," Auntie Mab exclaims as she wrestles with the helm to turn the ship around, "The ship is sailing itself. Must be selkies pushing us from under the water. Mischievous sprites they are! C'mon Tristram, we can still stop it with the rudder!"

Running to the back of the ship, the old woman pulls a screwdriver out of her sack, and a large carving knife out of one of the pouches sewn into her cloak. She jams the screwdriver into a pulley causing it to freeze, and begins slicing through rudder-control ropes, while Tristram pitches in by chewing through others.

"There now," she says, confident that she's managed to steady the rudder somewhat, "That ought to show those selkies! Can't sail the ship away with us in it if it can only go in circles!"

Stop the Ship: Thievery (1d20+10=22)

Rysethynn looks around, suddenly feeling unsteady as the boat begins to rock beneath her. Anxious to have solid ground under her feet again, she backs off a bit then runs and leaps off the boat toward the dock.

Earth looks at the scene for a moment, trying to identify anything useful, like a more near place to make what he was thinking. From the spot, he crouches and attempts a might jump, but the wood planks can't stand it's weight and sink under his feet, making the hulk of stone fall into the waters. Impressively, the earthen warforged attempts to swim up to the docks.

OOC: I was initially trying to spot, jump pull the ropes. But now that I0ve failed the jump check I'll use the second athletic to swim to the other side. I hope my perception roll gives me some bonus to something, otherwise I'm dead, lol.

OOC: I know this is not standard for skill challenge, BUT:
could I will use Mists of disarray AGAINST THE SHIP to push it back toward the dock or even slide (if attack roll is even) it back precisely?

I think that would require Arcana check to modify the spell thusly, so here are the rolls...blast...let's hope there is no need for that Arcana :)

Illarion looks overboard on the opposite side from the shore and gestures with his hands. Mists raise from the sea and the ship creaks ominously. Incredibly, it slides back toward the shore, easing the pull on druids rope and making it easier to bind it back.

Mists of Dissaray; damage; Arcana check (1d20+5=18, 1d8+8=12, 1d20+4=11)

[sblock=Former thoughts]
I was thinking on using the power on the mob along with intimidate to push them off and give the guards a chance to help us. Non-lethal of course. If that would be preferable to attacking inanimate object with psychic power, intimidate roll would be 17 with same roll I used for Arcana (1d20 = 4 :( )

Raijin grabs a rope from the ship side to help Devinihm bring the ship under control. He fumbles the line and it goes over into the water.

[sblock=OOC] Retcon (B) - Athletics assist to stop ship 1d20+5=7

Everyone makes 1 assist or skill check each round.

GM: To clarify what I posted before, I was looking for the following: Picking one of A, B, or C, then making one(1) roll.

Basically, you're either spending the whole first round trying to:
A) Get yourself off of the ship.
B) Stop the ship from drifting away.
C) Skip the above and get to work figuring out how to sail it back.

I'm all for using powers during skill challenges, but only the skill involved really matters.

I appreciate everyone posting so quickly (only need Xander yet), but if you haven't, please retcon your posts to specify A, B, or C and the single skill check you made. Failure on A does not necessarily mean you fell into the ocean, it just means you didn't make it off the ship.

Xander looks around the deck to try and find a secure rope that he can toss over to Rysethynn (who I presume is standing on the docks now) to secure the ship from floating away.
