D&D 5E The Light of Civilization - A 5e Renaissance Story [OOC]

Still waffling here- even more than usual, which is saying something. I guess I'll have to force myself through this step by step.

Step one: What would work best, for this group and this setting: serious scholar or ranged combat specialist?

BONUS: When I reach a decision here, it unlocks a write-up of the Sacred Order of Arcane Vigilance (or as the common folk call them "the Witchguard"), using the might and knowledge of the Maker to protect people from unauthorized wizards, magical beasts, and dangerous relics for more than 200 years...

I mean, I always suggest playing what you want to play, rather than what fits the group. My monk is sort of a scholar, and he would love talking to an actual scholar who knows more than he does.

From what it looks like, we have a fighter, a dwarves battlerager, a Paladin, a Cleric, a Sorcerer and a Monk. We could use both a ranger or another arcane spell caster, if that's what you're looking for in a scholar. A wizard would be nice. But at the same time, so would a Ranger. Either would fit a valuable role in the party. So pick which one you would like to play, and go with that.

I think both would work. From the discription both will be ranged support just one using spells the other a bow.

We have a good number of front line fighters between the battlerager, the duelist, and the magdalene. The monk and my pirate are versatile and can get in melee or stay back and sling spells. Then there is the sorcerer who is ranged. So we have a good mix including your character.

It's worth saying too that Arcata knows almost nothing scholarly about magic. All her 'knowledge' is practical, and very specific to herself. She doesn't even have the Arcana skill.

Just my 2 cents, the Artificer style of wizard seemed to be what you were leaning towards for awhile, and nobody is going to fault a party that can bring a lot of Arcane firepower and knowledge to each encounter. As far as party composition goes, I wouldn't worry too too much about it.

I'll admit off the bat that if the entire group was nothing but melee fighters, I'm not going to be throwing an endless amount of Traps and Flying Enemies against you folks. That's not to say I won't try and make encounters challenging and dynamic, but I really don't like "punishing" the party for being lacking in one area or the like. Not to mention, as said several times above, you folks are diverse as hell already.

I will admit, the idea of a Knowledge Cleric/Artificer is pretty appealing from a story perspective simply because in this setting, that is the blend of everything that existed before: Magic and the Gods, hand-in-hand, pretty cool stuff.

Looks like consensus is for a scholar, so I'll focus that way. I'm traveling and holiday-ing for most of the rest of the week (with some work packed in on either side for good measure), so I won't have much computer time, but I'll see what I can write up longhand.

I am very excited about this. Seems to have a lot of potential for role play, which is something I haven't done as much of in play by post (I'm a little new to it.)
