The mandalorian [Spoilers]

I think there's a fine line between paying homage to common western tropes and being predictable. This show is unfortunately on the side of being extremely predictable (and I think that's a fair judgement after 4 episodes). While throwing in the occasional trope is fine in my opinion, when the show feels like they are going through every trope one by one in very familiar ways, it just ends up lacking any excitement. Firefly also had western tropes, but it was mixed up with plot twists and clever humor. There just doesn't seem to be anything in The Mandalorian that is particularly clever.

Saw episode 5 today. It's not bad. I think I liked it a little more than last week's episode. I do feel like the show is a little disjointed, and the episodes don't build on the previous ones as well as they should. I wouldn't say there is anything especially clever or surprising in episode 5 either.

I'll tell you what I would like to see, and I don't know if this will happen in season 1 or not: a new Hutt CRIME BOSS. And not a CGI one, but a puppet like they did with Jabba in Return of the Jedi. But not a Jabba clone but a new Hutt with a new personality and agenda and quirks. And yeah maybe a few slave Leias, sure, why not.

I would also like to know how these effect scenes were shot.

I don't know if every scene uses this tech, but it's a kind of 3D liquid screen that is projected behind the actors:

One downside is that the displays used in Stagecraft require liquid crystals that take several years to grow. “It’s quite a process,” Kennedy said. Growing and maintaining these crystals, which are the backbone of LCD (liquid crystal display) screens, can be expensive and time-consuming, perhaps complicating the attempts of other companies to adapt the technology.

Negative:

I wish the way the AT-ST was defeated was a bit more clever. This just seemed like a bit of a writers block. There are so many clever ways in which they could have dealt with this primitive looking 2-legged vehicle. The way it ended up playing out was a bit disappointing.
I expected them to do the log head smash like the ewoks,so for me them doing the fall into the hole was nice since it was different than what we have already seen.

I want to know how the fobs work. It seems locking onto a target that doesn't have a tracking device on it from the distances involved would be....................problematic.

Furthermore, dude smashes the fob in the cantina and taps his head, he memorized it. What the hell does that even mean?? You can't memorize GPS coordinates that change as a target moves?? Or whatever the fob does, we don't really know what it traces.

Yeah. He even says he got her general location, not anything specific.

Found her, Mando! She's in the Dune Sea. :)

A friend of mine brought up an interesting point. If the child is supposed to be 50 years old and Yoda was 900 years when he died... how do those ages make any sense? So did Yoda die really young? Because he implied that he was old, and he died of old age.

I've also seen episode 5 now, and... meh. This is the first time they mention the name of the planet and it is nice to see speeder bikes again... but the ending of the episode is very anti-climactic. Certainly not one of the strongest episodes. The Mandalorian once again abandons the child, while knowing it isn't safe to do so. And surprise, surprise, the child gets captured... and then he is freed, and it feels like the episode didn't really go anywhere. Nothing new was added to the story and no stakes were set, apart from a tease of an upcoming character at the end.
