Map hitch

I was hoping to go over locations again in the hope of pinning down where our nightclub/bar is in Manhattan, but the map provided by Dantain's friend does not load properly onto my site.

Does anyone have a map of NYC that I would be able to use, or know of a map we would be able to link to for this discussion, without breaching copyrights?

Query-

Some of us established, Where, exactly our businesses were in relation to TMP..

Will these still be in effect? Will the businesses for that matter?

Yes, I still intend for the businesses to exist (erase them after all everyone's work? I think not!) but because TMP itself lost it's exact location, "in relation to TMP" is currently the only location the businesses have. :(

A dream of mine would be to create a map that we can slot the businesses into, one that could be updated. But until we know exactly where in Manhatten TMP is I can't do that.

Of course the other option is to write a disaster into the history of the setting between the current day and the setting's day, allowing us to remodel a small area of Manhatten... (and therefore use whatever neighbourhood map we come up with. ;) )

What do you think?

The disaster idea might be a simpler way to go with this than working with an existing map. It could probably be tied in with the crash that is already written into the story in Maine [If I recall correctly], maybe a secondary incident of some sort or a resulting localized shockwave causing an earthquake. I'm not sure if such a shockwave would work geologically speaking, but then much of what's in use doesn't exist yet biologically either.

Those are just a few ideas, I'm sure other possibilities could work, but considering that the base setting is the 'real world' in an alternate future, it might be best to keep things like disasters somewhat abstract.

Try www.creativeforce.com for a PDF map of Manhattan. They have free preview maps that you can download, and the zoom-in capability lets you expand the image to only a few city blocks.

As for an unoccupied location, how about Lower Manhattan, in the now-vacant block where the World Trade Center towers used to be? I'm sure that by 2030 the area will have been rebuilt. And whether they rebuild the WTC, or put up a monument (or both), the neighborhood was prime business location.

I tend to like the disaster idea too, thinking along the lines of a natural disaster, a man-made accident such as from a new way of storing and distributing electricity or one associated with the other occurances.
In the interest of keeping the setting reasonably real-world religion/politics/racism-free, we don't want it man-made and delliberate.

Thanks for the link Ssussunriyh, I'll look into it later tonight. ;) As for the WTC, I can see many ways that could be used but I'm a lil edgy about using it...

Of course I'd like to hear what others have to pitch. :D

I prefer a setting for the TMP that doesn't have a lot of backstory, especially if we are using a real city. My main reasoning is that by having a small amount of backstory then new guests will fit in faster and easier and not have to be told things like "sorry, central park is under water, now so don't pretend to go jogging there".

However, if you are using a fabricated modern city then back story is going to be important, because no one will know anything about it.

Does that make sense? Right now if I say "New York City" most people get the same image in their minds: central park, broadway, getting mugged, taxis, etc... This gives all of the roleplayers a common ground.

I don't know, really. I also like the idea of it being NYC yet... different. How about a tiny change, such as one block of the city is torn down and rebuilt in an effort to revitalize that section and bring in new business? A big change would alter the setting from modern to sci-fi, IMO.

Either way I can't wait to play in the new room.

In essence I agree with everyone and no one...at the same time.
A couple of generalized notes for everyone.

1. The area of WTC is currently not going to be open for new business it is instead getting a funky modern art/memorial thing built in its place (and it would be probably best to downplay that to keep emotions from running to high, imo)

2. Concrete deffinate locations work best, simply as this makes it where instead of saying something like "I own the XYZ club down the block" you can state "Traffic was murder getting from fifth and madison, up here took an half hour to go the block." creating a much more intresting intake.

3. Large landmarks should remains stable and where they are including Timesquare, Lady Liberty, et cetra.

Onto my opinions (yeah the above wasn't :-P)
I think it would be best if aliens were already intergrated to some extent into society (meaning the extistance and what have you), eventually someone is going to bring in a green three foot nut, expecting to be treated as normal. If aliens are accepted it will be easier for that to happen.

For a manmade diaster that would allow the alteration of a good part of NYC, currently in Canada certain scientists are working to capture lighting to power cities. Suppose the back up catchers for NYC overloads back shot during a minor tropical storm that hit Jersey, and the resulting oversurge of the grid would cause several fires, long term power outages are always associated with looting, pillaging...basically meaning you could demolish a good part of the city that way.

NYC is not near any tektonicplates (today), so earthrquakes in general wouldn't happen, and unless it was a colony ship (something in neighborhood of 400 Kilotons), that hit the surface in Maine, there wouldn't be enough impact to create a shockwave, let alone serious earthquake.

I suppose you could take a Deep Impact/Aramgeddon route and drop a large enough astroid near enough to NYC for it...but then why would prominat land marks remain umarked?

Hmmm...enough rambling for now...maybe more later.

I like the idea of a power plant/lightening accident because it is possible based on some things that already exist in this world. I don't like the idea of aliens, unless they are part of the setting as a distant theory as they are today. To me, having an alien in the room changes the setting from a James Bond or action movie feel to a Star Trek or Star Wars feel. Neither is better than the other, it's just that on is modern and the other is sci-fi.
