The monster you fear most

Rust monsters. Nothing like something that can destroy your most powerful equipment with one attack, as a low level monster. I've seen high/epic level parties release more "KILL IT NOW!" on a small cluster of rust monsters than anything else (after all, one failed save could cost them a quarter-million GP or more to repair, as opposed to death, which is much cheaper to fix).

Personally, the 3.0e Blazewight always struck me as a "run away!" monster. I've never had to fight one, but just from it's ability to do permanently unhealable-by-any-means HP damage I would never want to engage one. To be honest, that ability is so overpowered, even for an Epic creature, that I think it's poor design.

Beholders are always good for striking fear into the PC's, since as many have said, they are a whole lot of Save-or-die effects at once.

Done properly, illithid can have that effect to, especially if the DM can play up how alien and revolting they are. I had one give a graphic description of their feeding once, and still shudder at the thought.

Scariest monster is without a doubt...

Spectre: Incorporeal plus double energy drain. Turn resistance. Very rapid spawn creation. And, really, who isn't afraid of ghosts just a little at some point in their life?

Virtually any other monster that is scary is scary because in some fashion its like a Spectre. The exceptions tend to be monsters that provoke individual phobias. In fact, the monster is so hideous that I don't generally place them when I'm the DM. They are just too brutal.

Monsters, other than humans, responcible for the most deaths in my gaming:

1) Green slime - The #1 killer of inexperienced players.
2) Stirge - Very strong basis for a monster both mechanically and in its fear provoking appearance. Start dropping templates on them and they get even nastier. Worse yet, even nastier under my house rules because they can make use of the clinch special manuever to become very difficult to deal with while feeding.
3) Shadow - I've seen this monster disorganize and terrorize more parties than any other. It's the weak version of the Spectre, and if you don't have a cleric in the party, you'll probably die.
4) Vampire - A demi-spectre, that trades incorporality for a host of other powers and disadvantages and generally comes out HD for HD weaker on the exchange. Also, less alien and implacable, which can be good and bad from the DM's perspective. Still nasty, especially if a spellcaster.
5) Gargoyles - This is more due to the fact that I love gargoyles than the monster itself, but very nasty brute with high average damage for its size and HD and its ability to hide lets it obtain close range and surprise easily.

I don't play as often as a DM, but monsters that I've killed my own PC's
1) Orc
2) Blue Dragon
3) Vampire
4) Mindflayer
5) Pech

I don't think I've been killed by the same thing twice.

For me as a player the one think that really creeps me ou is Giant Spiders, just the thought of what it would look like ,multiple eyes, hairy w/ Dripping fangs and 8 legs-UGH!

Humans, because they will kill you and take your stuff. Sometimes they are epic, so humans are the most dangerous...

Good point, I suppose. I know when I play PF/3.x and I play a ranger, he's always non-human so he can take Humans as his first favored enemy....
