To further illustrate my total disregard for pop culture, I don't have a clue what "The Soup" is, other than Kramer can't have any.
The Soup is a divination spell where Desilu, the two-headed god of TV, sends an imp to tell me what's been going in pop-culture that week in a sarcastic tone.

The Soup is 9 kinds of awesome!

The formula they've used since day 1 (when it was called Talk Soup) is take clips from pop culture TV and mock it mercilessly. It has spawned Sports Soup (on Vs) and Web Soup (G4) as direct spin-offs, and shows like Tosh 2.0 (Comedy Central) as "homages."

It keeps you current on pop culture, while simultaneously allowing you to retain your sense of superiority (Souperiority?) by letting you laugh at what lesser minds are watching.

But in a good way.;)

If you are going with teen sensations, I think Demi Lovato or Selena Gomez would do more for gaming than either of the two choices. They have beauty and, more importantly, brains that can effectively argue why gaming is good.

Why is it called " The Soup " now?

I mean, it is not as if I ever really knew what Talk Soup was about, but that at least is the name I recognize.

Its called "The Soup" because they dropped "Talk" from the title...which they did since they expanded the format from just covering talk shows to covering all kinds of essentially lightweight TV fare.

As to why "Soup" in general? My guess is that its just about how they're metaphorically making soup by adding all kinds of ingredients together to make their show...with a bit of post-modern kewl thrown in for good measure.

They do do a nod to the show's history, too- they still have a segment called "Chat Stew" which covers talk shows.

I don't think so. Even before my daughter started coming to me and saying, "Hey, Dad, can you get on Amazon and download some Justin Bieber mp3s for me?" I already knew the gist of who he was. To not have even heard his name means you have to pretty much not watch TV, not read any news, not even look at any magazines whatsoever, not go to sites like Google and Yahoo!, and not talk to your coworkers.

It's quite an accomplishment to never have heard of Justin Bieber. Just not one that I'd necessarily be proud of...
That's. . . quite the bizarre hyperbole to be flinging around, really. But hey, whatever. :erm:

Far as it goes for me, I do watch [some, though ad-free, and not a lot of] TV, and read a fair bit of [filtered, ad-free] news on a regular basis, but no, I "don't even look at any magazines whatsoever" (so, one point so far. . .)

As for Google, I use it most days, on average. Again, filtered and ad-free. Yahoo? I have no need for it, but when I am directed there for whatever reason, it's (yep, you guessed it) likewise filtered and ad-free.

Coworkers, I most certainly do talk to, just like you. Along with a fairly wide variety of other people, on many a day, of various ages and walks of life.

I might not see my lack of awareness of random mainstream kiddie sensation A, B or C as "an accomplishment", but in no way would I ever think of it as an actual failing of even the slightest import.

With regards to television, news and the internet, I do things a bit differently than most. Or so it would seem. Jeez. Live and let live, right?

Not sure why I felt compelled to respond, now I think about it. But. . . it just struck me as such an extreme, peculiar, and possibly defensive post, that I kinda had to.

Bleh. :p

Not true at all! After learning of Justin Bieber (Who I initially thought was Sarah Palins daughter's dude) I am glad I knew nothing of him.

I have not heard of Justin Bieber before this thread, and the only reference to Jonas Brothers I heard was from NCIS los Angeles.

I generally only flip through the channels on my favourites list, which is largely just the discovery networks. I google only those things I care about, and I don't pay attention to most magazines not academic related.

If you go avoid celebrity news you will never hear of non issues like that.

I know little of the pop culture out there. When I grew up in the 80's I knew little of the pop culture outside of the metal scene as well. Sitcoms, unless iti s BIG BANG THEORY are not my thing.

Congratualtions to anyone that did not know who Justin beber was. I guess it is some sort of accomplishment!
