And, in a well-balanced, credibly designed game (as opposed to a story), they all have something to contribute to success in every challenge without breaking out of their archetype.

IOW, you don't want them to actually be Aragorn and Gandalf, because you're admitting that in that story Gandalf is a lot more powerful than Aragorn, and so in said game their powers would have to be balanced, and therefore your example is still useful because...?

You can either have a fighter and a wizard on equal terms, or you get to have fighters not as powerful as wizards. Those ideas are not particularly compatible.

But yes, this is a really stupid argument, and has been done many times before, and if you don't understand this you don't understand it. So, okay. I will be done here.

Didn't turn into the humour thread the OP hoped for. Mind you, in General Discussion it was almost destined to turn out this way.

You could try restarting the thread in the 4e forum if you think it has legs.
