The Next Most Unrealistic Power

Indeed. There is nothing at all verisimilitude-breaking about magic allowing for a magical effect. What is verisimilitude-breaking is something non-magical (mundane) allowing for a magical effect.

4e healing is still high on that list, for me. Not the idea of it, mind you, but the execution.

RC, I'd be interested in your thoughts on my wound system in the House Rules forum. http://www.enworld.org/forum/4e-fan...9-warhammer-esque-wounds-d-d-4th-edition.html

Mage hand.

There's just no way anyone would ever bother to adventure if he could just use magic to get beer from the fridge without getting up.

Thus, the entire premise of the game (PCs go on adventures) is unrealistic.

The one time we got my dad to play D&D the PCs met in a tavern, and while getting the job from the mysterious stranger my father's gnome ordered a beer. "1 copper piece?! I have 47 gold! What's the conversion rate?" - some math later... - "I'm not adventuring! I'm going to stay here and drink 1 copper ales 'til I die!"

Later, having convinced the gnome to go adventuring...
"a pit trap?! There's no pit traps in the bar!"
"goblin attack?! There's no goblins in the bar!"
"An ogre?! Tell me, why did we leave the bar?"

That's the thing. In 4e, fighters aren't guys with swords, they are magic users, whose source of power is something called Martial. Through intense training and dedication, they have accessed the magical powers contained within them.

One of the "spells" they can cast is a 15 foot compulsion field forcing all enemies into their reach.

If you are just a guy with a sword, you're an npc, and probably a minion to boot.

That's one way to look at it, but it doesn't create a compelling "game reality" for me.

Actually it goes a bit farther than that. All PC classed characters are superheroes wearing tights & capes that happen to appear as armor, robes, etc. as an illusionary effect.

Oh, and welcome!

What's the power where you rip your eyeball out and throw it down an endless portal through the Abyss? Then it relays what it sees back to your brain for all of eternity?

That power seems awesome but not necessarily unrealistic in an overpowered sort of way. B-)

Personally I have no problem with 4e's "martial goes beyong the impossible".

I never once though that a high level fighter in D&D was supposed to be modelling Conan or Aragorn.

I always assumed it was intended to model Gilgamesh and Heracles.

To put it anime terms....

The male protoganist from Samurai Chaploo - mid to high end Heroic tier
The titular character from Jubei-chan: Ninja Girl - mid to high end Paragon
Vizards, Captains and Espadas from Bleach - mid to high end Epic tier.

Conan AT BEST is a level 5 character in AD&D terms IMO.
