I do like the idea of potential death with most fighting. Deadlands was that way for me. You could potentially die with any shot, so you were careful, but could also fight fairly effectively, you just were guarantee to run through your store of chips in a hurry.

Cyberpunk:2020. Their gun system was super deadly, but guns were one of the first things people would use in response to a threat. My character was killed w/in 5 minutes of the game starting, I think before I even had an action.

You could always just play Rolemaster tho. Some level 1 shmoe could stab you w/a spear and luck out on every roll (open end high AGAIN!?) and kill a top level character. I've heard of similar events in Warhammer FRPG, but I'm not familiar enough w/it myself to say whether it can happen there or not.

Play a revenant with the whole "I keep acting even when I'm on negative hitpoints" kit and kaboodle. Take AOE and auto-hit powers.

Yeah, but with 1hp, your bloodied value is 0(half of 1, round down). So you die at -0hp, also known as 0hp.

Also, party-unfriendly AoE becomes a very big no-no.

I'd say the only problem with just implementing a 1 hp system is that there's no shades of gray, you're either fully and completely functioning or unconscious. Now, normal D&D doesn't have a death spiral or wound penalties, but having multiple hp means it was possible to be beaten up but not down.

So if I were actually implementing this in a system, I would turn up AC (Making the base 15 would do it) and put in a system for having conditions like "Beaten Up: -2 to rolls" or "Broken Arm: Your arm is broken, you can't use it and it hurts"

Edit: I'd also get rid of auto-hit on a twenty so that you can't kill big dragons with large ACs by just spamming low level attacks.

In the 1HP game, you fall if hit, and if hit while fallen, you're dead. You know what it reminds me of? Wargames.

I can't tell you how many games have a rule where if your unit* is hit, it is disabled, and if hit when disabled, it is destroyed.

* Heheheheh- I said "unit."

If you hit my unit does that mean my chit flips over?

Seriously? You guys roll damage in D&D for stubbing your toe?

Wtf?

Put that on the list of crap read on this board I've never done in a D&D game.
