It's entirely in Greek, Latin, and Aramaic, and I've heard there are no subtitles.

What audience is this movie intended for? Seminarians and Classics professors?

From what I've heard from people who have seen the rough-cut, it's a powerful and moving experience---if you want it to be. Like most films it seems to require a certain investment on the viewer's behalf.

The idea of Hollywood producing what is essentially a Passion Play would normally fill me with dread. The fact that Gibson is in charge makes me eagerly await the film (as we are both fairly traditional Catholics).

I do hope Gibson removes the subtitles that were reportedly dropped into the film for that last rough-cut

To Gibson's credit, this is not exactly a Hollywood film. I recall an interview with Gibson where he related that he was warned by a close Hollywood friend to not pursue The Passion project because it would end his career in Hollywood.

Me too. If reports are accurate the the script has been crafted so that subtitles are not needed to follow the story, then why bother with subtitles?

I'd prefer it without subtitles, myself. After all, not as if the book isn't out. ;) You can always read it up before going, in order to keep it fresh and so know what's going on. Even so, anyone who's even remotely familiar with the story will understand what's going on.

One thing that irked me about the trailer I saw was the use of the Ecclesiastical Latin pronounciation of "Ecce homo" rather than the Classical Latin pronounciation. Sure, Pilate would likely have spoken Greek anyway given the Hellenization of the Empire so I'm lucky to be getting Latin in the first place, but hearing that "Echay Omo" when I was expecting an "Eckay Homo" yanked me out of the trailer. :(
