the portal opens, would you go through?

I've already done it. Except instead of the voice saying "This is the doorway to Faerun." it said "I can see the head." Well, I went and it's turned out to be the stupidest move I've ever made.

As a pharmacist, I would be in like Flynn with my herbal knowledge. In a few years, after my magical apprenticeship ends I would be well on my way to amassing power, wealth and comfort.

However, my wife certainly wouldn't go with me. And without her and my son I'm staying here.

ok here's what happens. a magical portal opens in your bedroom. a voice comes from the portal informing you that it is a portal to Faerun/Krynn/Oerth/Eberron/insertyourworldhere. you may take your significant other and children through with you, but no one else. you will be de-aged to 15 (base adulthood age) if you don't have kids, or 22 if you do, with the kids being deaged to about 5 years old.

would you go through?

I'd ask the voice if I had a day to purchase some science textbooks (primarily chemistry, but also some physics stuff, with a focus on materials technology). If that were the case, I'd come back and ask where EXACTLY it was going to send me and WHEN. If it was a comfortable place that I knew no wars were likely to come to in the near future, I'd go through and become uber-wealthy through my inventions and breakthroughs. I'd muster an army and by outfitting them with my uber-tech gear, I'd conquer all the malcontented nations (since fantasy worlds always put evil people in evil nations) and begin my retirement and spend a year learning arcane magic so that I could amuse myself with prestidigitation after my many years of withdrawal from video games and pretty colors.

On my death bed I'd proclaim to everyone that they are not indeed real and it's too bad, but they'd have to deal with that. That way I'd go down in history as the greatest eccentric (weirdo) of all time.

Or music.

There's music. And even without electricity you could bring along the necessary knowledge on making a victrola-type machine. Especially with all the wealth and power you have amassed from not being such a simpleton as everyone around you.

I would go thoroughly but only if I could take a full set of modern encyclopedias, chemistry books, physics books, medical books, engineering books and the like with me.
Along these lines, I want this in the trunk of my Oldsmobile Eighty-Eighty along with a 12 gauge and a chainsaw. Groovy. :-)

Seriously I would just consider it if I get to keep my current age and take along a small stockpile of modern amenities and knowledge. Additionally, I'd want a stipulation that I won't be dropped in the middle of some nowhere village without any means of support such that I'd be like a reality show contestant.

Not any D&D world I'm familiar with. If they let me go into the Twilight (my homebrew system's homebrew setting that I haven't finished yet), however... that I could live with, if they sent me to Brightsea or Skie (because I can get to Brightsea from Skie easily, and the skie would be sympathetic to my plight). With my knowledge and brain, I'd probably join a technomancer cult and become a secret power in Brightsea; I'd use my influence to hire a decent Remaker from the Ark, and become a genetic superhuman. I probably won't get magic, but that's OK; so long as I stay away from Arch City I'm not going to need to defend myself from orcs.

But it'd be a tossup; I probably wouldn't go, in the end, because I have friends here, and the living conditions in Brightsea aren't noticably better than here.

Well I would get to be one year older and live in a magic world where I can become my characters slaughter demons, undead, and golems with magic swords but on the other hand I'd miss my friends and family. I say if I can after I die if forgotten realms I reapper here same age I say yes. If I can't come back I say no if I can take my friends and know we'd all come back safe so no time past in this world I say YEAH LETS GO!!!! Jumping through the portal
