the portal opens, would you go through?

Seriously, no, never go through....

I'd drop any of us in the modern day amazon for a month and wouldn't give a dime for any of our chances. Dropping a modern day person in a fantasy world were everything is out to kill and/or eat you. LOL, You could be the greatest chemist/engineer/video game player in the world and you'd still get eaten alive.

That is, of course, if you're not willing to eat THEM first. I mean, no fingerprints, no DNA, no CSI-like detective stuff. The only thing you have to remember are some pesky divinations, and they can all be negated (though the way to avoid Speak with Dead is kinda gross =/)...you're never gonna get caught if you know what you're doing...

If I could choose where to go (so that I'm not suddenly in Chult or Anauroch), I wouldn't think twice. Ok, I would think twice about where I wanted to go, there are just so many options to become rich and/or powerful.

Goodbye student loan payments?
Goodbye quarterly tax returns?
Goodbye idiotic customers?

I'll take my chances with the beholders and mind flayers.

Where do I sign?

ok here's what happens. a magical portal opens in your bedroom. a voice comes from the portal informing you that it is a portal to Krynn. you may take your significant other and children through with you, but no one else. you will be de-aged to 15 (base adulthood age) if you don't have kids, or 22 if you do, with the kids being deaged to about 5 years old.

would you go through?

Absolutely. And I would most likely take up Adventurer as my proffession.

Sadly, since no published setting contains a Remove Carbohydrates spell, I don't think my wife will be joining me.

Especially with all the wealth and power you have amassed from not being such a simpleton as everyone around you.

Ah. Typical superiority complex. If you don't ditch that attitude, you won't last long in your new world. :)

People who live in less technologically-developed places are not simpletons. They are just as bright as you or I, but aren't standing on the shoulders of as many giants. They know more about living under primitive conditions than we do. Lots more, considering that we know zilch. YOu're going to have to learn a whole lot from those simpletons.

As for being a simpleton, try this - You tought to ask the voice if you could step out and buy a few books. But you forgot to ask the voice if those books would actually be relevant! You're stepping into a world with magic - that implies different physical laws. A book of modern chemistry or materials science won't be very useful if the world you're going to deals in Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. :)

I would ask where and when it was taking me. What kinda catch is there? Will I keep my knowledge? Can I take silver coins, books, and other stuff with me and not lose them?

Then if I get the answers I like, hell yeah. :)

I would load up on Forgotten Realms books (if I go there), science books, and cloths. I would have many books of recipes, with one for household items like toothpaste.

I'd take a few step back, and then try to do some scientific experiments on the portal. I certainly wouldn't go through, though I might toss some small animals into it - and retrieve them with a long rope, to see what effects it might have upon them...

Really, the only RPG universe I'd want to go to would be that of Transhuman Space, and I think that getting there would be much more fun the "traditional" way - getting old and making lots of money in the process. Being old in the TS universe is probably a lot more fun than in just about any other setting...
That is, of course, if you're not willing to eat THEM first.
My general policy is to never eat or drink anything that isn't prepackaged, and I'm sticking to this policy until I can befriend a cleric who can cast Neutralize Poison and Cure Disease...

...which might be a good idea in any case. Sanitary conditions on most fantasy worlds are just plain horrible.
